Curious, If many have seen or heard of players being offered a scholarship for the 2nd year and asked to pay full tuition the first. I have been asked this question twice and in both cases they are out of state schools. One is a 2012 and the other is a 2013. I guess that would be considered a preferred walk on? What is to keep them from offering anything the 2nd year after you just covered a year yourself? Wouldn't you be better off going to a Juco saving money and then taking the scholarship the following year? Lots of questions no experience or answers please help.

woodonly, welcome to HSBBW! In my opinion, I'd be very cautious about considering such an offer, unless perhaps it's the player's dream school. Once he has been there for a year, many coaches (but not all) will assume that he's already established himself there, and they know that transferring can be a pain, so they don't have a lot of incentive to provide a scholarship, unless he becomes a very key player for them.

Also, if the athlete meets the definition of a "recruited student-athlete" (which it sounds like he will), he won't be able to transfer to another Div. I (if he would choose to do so) and be immediately eligible. He would have to serve a year in residence before being eligible to compete.

Could go to JUCO for a year, less expensive, develop as a player, and see what Div. I's are interested at that point.
Hello, and welcome to the forum.

I have heard it is done, but is only as good as the coaches word.
However if the coach leaves, changes his mind, or you do not live up to expectations, the promise of 2nd year money will most likely not happen.

As Rick has pointed out, once they have you, an unscrupulous coach could very well take advantage of a player they are already have in the system for free. As to not being eligible, if they do not give you any money, and you did not hit any of the triggers that constitute a recruited athlete(i.e. paid visit), then you might be able to transfer the following year and still play.

Regardless anyone in their right mind would prefer not to get into that situation to begin with. So ask other parents/players of the coach who claims he will give money the 2nd year. It will all boil down to how trustworthy the coach is(assuming he stays with the program).

I'd like to add my welcome, as well.

The short answer to your question is "no," at least not one of which I'm aware.. and, if you stop and think about it, I think you'd have to question the reliability of a board that invites anonymous accounts of past occurrences of that nature.

In my opinion, the best way to verify a coach's promise or representation is to speak directly with players and/or parents to whom the same sort of promise or representation has been made. An essential part of "doing one's homework" when it comes to recruiting is to do the best job you can of talking with current and recent participants in the program.

When approached one-on-one, most people will do what they can to give you honest insights into the program. After all, they were once in your shoes, and they recall how they appreciated honest responses to their questions.

There is no better place than here to find players or parents who have some information on a school. Post in the "ask about Colleges" section and ask about the program. As Prepster posted when you do a visit talk to players, get their contact information, go through past rosters, between former and present players you can get pretty good information on the program. Scout or travel ball coaches are also a good source of information.
