As some of you know, my son is recovering from labrum surgery. He isn't progressing as hoped and may not make the college team, I am assuming that he will be Red Shirted but if not, let's say they cut him. If he transfers to another school (JUCO to JUCO)and makes the team his sophomore year, then goes to a 4 year school and continues to play, How many years does he have when he reaches the four year school? (2 or 3)

You have 5 years to play 4. The clock starts the min you register in a post HS college.
Here i am confused. Did he transfer and spend his 1st year at the JC. Then he played in his 2nd year at JC ? If so he has 3 years left at the 4year college.
The 1st year at JC eats up 1 year but not an eligibility. The 2nd year eats up 1 more of the 5 years and also 1 yr of eligibility. He would have 3 yrs left of eligibility and 3 of the 5 years.
5 to play 4 is the rule for D1 schools. There is also a hardship waiver for incapacitating injury which can extend the 5 years to 6, but I believe the waiver is not easily granted. See the D1 Manual 14.2.4.

D2 and D3 have a different rule: 4 seasons during the first 10 semesters or 15 quarters of full time study. So a player who doesn't pursue school fulltime may have more than 5 years.

...starts the minute you register for 12 units in a post HS college...

IT is also possible to "grey shirt"...using up no NCAA DI eligibility but accumulating units by staying academically under full time...but once you go fulltime...the clock runs...

Cool 44
