I like your method better.

Just make sure you get some high quality instruction in there, too. Lots of repetitions are great, but you need to be repeating the correct actions. Reps build habits, which can be good habits, but they can also be bad habits.

If you build good habits, you will leave your slacker friend in the dust. Say nothing, just smile and stick to your work ethic!
Do what you want to do.

I am going to assume that you play baseball because you enjoy it. I also assume that you enjoy practicing as well. If you enjoy doing what you do then continue doing it. My son practices, on his own, probably four to five times a week. He throws and hits in the cage and does fielding (on my days off) because he enjoys it.

If your buddy thinks that he is going to improve drastically by just attending team practices then he will probably be in a shock as he goes on. I have no idea how old you are but individual training is almost a must if you want to excell in HS and beyond.

One thing to add. Even though he hates it sometimes I have incorportated speed training and strength training into his plan. He wasn't particularly thrilled with it at first but it is paying off for him both at the plate and in increased quickness and explosiveness. Don't go crazy with weights or anything but start working on making yourself a better athlete, especially as a catcher.
