There is a huge shortage of officials across the state. Between last year and the beginning of our season this year, our chapter lost 11 officials that equated to approximately 140 years of experience. Those 11 officials were 25% of our chapter members. We did get some new ones, but only about 6 or 7.

Reasons for leaving were on par with the results of a poll done several years ago across the nation:

1. tired of all of the **** they have to put up with.
2. pay
3 & 4. family & job issues.

We were able to cover all of our games with two officials, with the exception of two freshman games. My contacts with the Dallas chapter said they didn't cover ANY freshman games. Simply not enough officials.
I dug this up from the archives. A year ago and I still feel the same way.

I once had to put it this way to an asst. who got tore up over every bad call. Baseball Food Chain 101:
Major league umpires
Japanese & Mexican League
AAA
AA
A
Rookie Ball
Independent Leagues
NCAA Div 1
NCAA Div II
NAIA
NCAA Div III
NCAJC Div I
NCAJC Div II
NCAJC Div III
High School Umpires
JV & Frosh Umpires
Way down the list to expect any more than what you get.
Sugar will get you more than vinegar..........

Well, I know of a freshman preseason scrimmage where the catchers were calling the game. I believe the catcher for one team ended up with a fist to his face, and the batter ended up with a broken hand.

In conclusion...we need umps.

True, but two years later the presence of umpires didn’t stop him from coming off the mound and cross checking a runner.
