Only your doctor can answer that question for your shoulder. In some cases, intense PT and weight training can build up sufficient strength in your shoulder and avoid surgery. I've seen that approach succeed and the player in question never missed more than a week. He is not a pitcher. I have also heard rumors that Pedro Martinez has pitched with a labral tear for years, but I've never seen anyone provide definitive confirmation of that fact.
Upstate i went through what your going through this fall. I came down with shoulder becoming sore and went to my family doctor. Sent me to get an MRI and three MRI's later all they could come up with is a possible tear of the labrum. Ended up having surgery because intense pt may not be able to cure it. Def go see an orthopedic doctor. Many pro teams send pitchers to get 3 or 4 different opinions because it is very hard to see a laberal tear. I have my surgery the week of thanksgiving and it looks like i'll start playin catch in the end of march and hopefully back to normal by may or june. Make sure you get an MRI to see what is going on inside the shoulder. Good luck with everything
I tore the labrum in my non throwing shoulder diving back into first base. My shoulder kept popping out of place because of it. I went to a specialist and I had surgery at the end of Septmeber. Right now I can only do light lifting and cannot swing a bat. Doctor said that I shoulder be cleared at the end of January.
Upstate - as has been said - you need to see an orthopedist. Preferably one who deals with sports injuries. Your shoulder doesn't have to be "dislocated" to have a labral tear. Anytime, out bodies continue to have pain - we should investigate until that pain is explained. Pain is a signal by the body that something is wrong which sometimes a minor thing requiring rest and sometimes something very significant. YOU NEED TO SEE A SPORTS MEDICINE SPECIALIST!!!!
Good advice from everyone. Remember this, if that pain comes back, see another sports/ortho. My son had similar situation his jr year HS, went to Dr. had MRI, nothing showed. to make long story short, he had scope this past summer (betwen his so/jr year college.) Arm is stronger than had ever been, he'd had labrum issue all along...not torn, but strained, had pain but learned to live with it since Dr told him no tear, nothing on MRI. Trust yourself, keep asking til you get answers.
