I got a late start on baseball due to lack of enthusiasm for sports from my parents. But as a sophomore in high school I absolutely love it. I have made huge strides in just the past season with my swing and 3B/CF. I missed my freshman season which may come back to haunt me in the long run. My dream is to play college baseball, no matter what level.

I'm 6'0" 150 pounds. I need rapid muscle gain so that I can start on Varsity next season. Currently I am just doing as many push-ups as I can fit into a day, but I doubt that it is that simple. Any tips? I'm not a huge fan of lifting weights, I'd prefer exercises such as long toss, push-ups, etc.

Also, does anybody know of any free public batting cages available in the Houston/West University area? I'm talking like YMCA-type places (does the YMCA have batting cages?) where I can just go for a few hours each day and swing until my hands are stained with blood.

Any input is appreciated.

This is america, nothings free.Baseball is an expensive sport,if you arent ready to pay the price both physically and money wise, this isnt for you.

No place will be free unless its your school.Ive lived in 3 states, and Ive never ran across a free place to workout or hit aside from the HS itself.

Setting goals is good for yourself. But be realistic. There is a good chance alot of the guys are better than you.Im sure some of the guys from the team meet once in a while and toss or lift together,or something of that sort. The ones who are dedicated are usually always doing something

Use your judegment,but be smart.

...

How about going to your local baseball field and hitting some balls off a tee? As many swings as you want, with minimal cost.

Half of this post doesn't really make sense. There are a bunch of weird contradictions...

It's great to see your enthusiasm for the sport man...it's kids like you that will go far.
You might need some more people if you want to go to a ballfield and hit off a tee,or else you will have to run after your balls after every round of swings you take

Couldnt tell if you were being sarcastic or being truthful, but I was answering his questions from my own experiences.I too had a late start on the game of baseball.Only my 4th year to be playing
There are alot of late starters in Baseball. Heck Tony Gwynn started late in college and look at where he has gone. There are many ways to get better on your own as well. When I was sick I would tell my son to get a bucket of balls. Throw them as far as he could. Take the bucket out to where the group of balls were and throw them back.

Also get yourself a good batting tee. (SCHUTT has a dependable portable one and about two dozen wiffle balls). You can hit these into the fence and pretty much anywhere.

You can also get a batting weight (donut) and try taking overload/underload swings about three times a week. Work on some of these things on your own and you are well on your way!

Good Luck!
If I were you Id go and talk to the coach about your situation. Before our tryouts started,I had talked to the coach and had asked regardless of if I make the team or not, could I come and use the cages and catch bullpens.Let him know YOU want this and he will remember.

You likely will have to pay for a cage or something but they arent terrible on prices. Also, regardless of if you make it or not,get a membership at a gym.It helps

The Gym Im at is fair, only 20 bucks a month for unlimited use.
