This week my son will be mailing out envelopes to several colleges within a tri-state area. These envelopes contain a letter of interest, personal, student, and baseball information, and a copy of his summer league schedule. His stats and newspaper clippings will be in there also.

He's comprised a list of about 14 schools that he likes. I don't think he's contacting enough schools. Also, he seems to be targeting very high end baseball schools, mostly D1 but also some very good D3's.

If he's not good enough to be approached by any of these schools (I honestly don't know how he rates amongst the competition)then shouldn't he be approaching more schools that are a bit less notorious? What would you have him do?

Cast a large net. Nothing wrong with aiming high, but in his marketing he'll want to reach as many as feasible. I've heard 20 is a good number to aim for.
Has he or will he play in any showcase type events this summer? You might want to consider one or two. TRHit is an excellent resource, if you haven't contacted him already you should.
Good luck and keep us posted.
There was a piece of advice on this site that I found very helpful for my son. Make three lists of schools: the stretch list, the possibles and the shoe-ins. You didn't mention academics. You will know best about your son's GPA and test scores and the caliber of his high school. You also mentioned not know exactly how he rates with the competition. It's a good idea to know this. Several ways to determine this: high school coach, summer coach or a scout who has seen him at tournaments/showcases. The latter will give your SON an indication of how he rates..he'll be on the field playing against good competition. 20 schools sounds about right, though. Maybe a few more. Good luck.
I think it's very helpful if your son can get some visits in to some schools to get an idea of what he's looking for. My son went to a baseball camp at the school that was his first choice and found out he really didn't like it that much for a variety of reasons. It also help narrow down what he wanted and didn't want in a school.
We did a search on the college board site of the area of the country, size of school and his intended major then read about the schools and narrowed it down some more. We initially sent about 15-20 letters and just recently sent some more based on his changing view of what he was looking for.

Send a letter to the schools that you have a genuine interest.

Your interest in the school and program is signficant to the coach. Now, more than ever, because of their potential scoring on the APR (academic performance report).

For the first time, you are likely to hear, no.

Pick yourself up and go to the next school.

It's a long time from now until next summer when the music stops.

A good friend of my son's was committed to a juco and just accepted an offer from his dream school.

The draft has an impact Especially on the pitching.

Take the visits.

They change a kid's perspective dramatically.
