And no coach sits a kid even when he is hitting "darts" at the fielders---you always want your hitters hitting the ball hard--sooner or later they will go through or over
Yes, the coach does sit a kid that hits hard directly to fielders. Jr. sat the bench the entire game yesterday except in the following 2 scenarios: 1.) Slow runner hit a single and son was put in to pinch run. 2.) Same slow runner got up to bat the next time and forgot to report in, so in order to avoid the out (I think? This is what Jr. told me that happened, I had no clue what was going on and didn't even know a coach could do this.) Jr. was put in on full count to bat. Hit the first pitch that was given to HIM, which would have been the 6th pitch for slow runner. Jr. hit a hard shot directly to 3rd base. Third base stopped the ball, bobbled, and didn't attempt to throw Jr. out because he was already on first base by the time 3rd base stood up to throw. Jr. was charged with the at bat and no hit. On base due to error. Stats in newspaper show that slow runner never batted, not even the pinch run at bat. No one hit that ball I guess because Jr. wasn't credited either. Very confusing.
I am not saavy about stats etc., but is this accurate? I asked these questions in another thread with no response. Jr. has had 8 at bats total. All in a couple of games and is now sitting the bench except when pitching. Designated hitter is used when pitching. He had one strike out, 2 hard hits directly to fielders and was thrown out, 4 that he beat throws, and the above mentioned hit where the fielder did not attempt to throw as Jr. was already on base by the time fielder stood up. What's the batting average? If Jr. beats out the throw, is it a hit? So far, only 1 of the throws that he beat has been counted as a hit. According to the paper, the rest have been counted as errors and no hit. Again, very confusing. Maybe you can explain how this works?

Batting stats in the paper look like this:
Slow runner: 0-0-0-0
Jr.: 1-0-0-0
Suggestions for improvement for Jr? He is hitting the ball hard, but will need to stop beating the throws and hit the ball elsewhere so it is clearly a base hit. Otherwise, he will be hitting the bench.

If the scorekeeper feels the play should have been made with normal effort, but it was bobbled or a bad throw was made, it would be an error. If the ball was hit, the fielder makes the play clean and makes a good throw and the runner beats the throw, it would be a hit. Exception would be a fielder's choice.
Good throws, straight to first baseman's chest. Still beat it. One was unbelievably close and looked like it could have gone either way.
My son has been benched the put in for a pinch runner in a few games. Then comes in as defensive replacement so to speak. So he's gotten less at bat's lately. The pinch running has actually helped his base running. He must look slow because they keep trying to pick him off but haven't got him yet and he has a couple steals.
I think it's helped him relax a little at the plate. Before he worried if he didn't get a hit he wouldn't play. Now it's kind of like he's a role player even if he's not starting he knows he'll be in the game at some point. He hasn't had a strike out in a while. He walks, hit's it right at someone, or get's a bloop single.
Yesterday he didn't start but he came in early in the game for his defense. Walked the first at bat then got an outside pitch hit it hard straight at the right fielder luckly it took a bounce before it got there. He was dew to bat at the end of the game with the other team ahead. Coach started to bring in a pinch hitter for him like had become normal but then told him to stay in. Unfortunatly the player in front of him got the last out. I haven't always agreed with the coach but I fealt good that he was going to let him bat in tough spot.
I've been telling my son all season "if you can't control it don't worry about it" seems to be helping me.

Some of you seem more concerned with the stats instead of how well or how poorly the player is hitting the ball--not a good thInterestingly with our travel team we do not keep stats--I keep the book and can look them up if need be but why?--myself and my coaches know who is hitting the ball well and who isnt--who needs wotk and who doesn't--not only that I can assure you that each of parents know their kids stats
TRhit & Horse,
You guys were absolutely right and I was wrong. Should've listened to you and not gotten so worked up!!! Son started today. First hit was to 2nd base for an out. Second hit almost to fence between left and center. Triple!!! Next time I'm listening to you! Thanks for the great comments that seem to have been right on the money!! We won with a run rule. I'll try to let go of the stats thing in the future, but I'm liking the .500 too much to pass up today.

3ball,
Nice chatting with you. Great question and relavent to many parents and players. As I said in previous post, it seems that TRhit and horse are right on the money with their theories. We all worry about our kids and want them to do well because we know how bad they want it. I can say that I would have been better off to not worry about it as it appears Jr. has gotten through it on his own and hopefully is a better player because of it. Sounds like your son is a determined player with a good head on his shoulders and he will get through it too. Best of luck to you both!! Take a deep breath dad, this too will pass!!

Tell your kid to drop bombs
Season is over just wanted to give an update.
Sorry I don't keep track of exact stats. Just know he eventually got more balls to drop in for hits then he had outs. He would get walked quite a bit and had very few strikeouts. Played 3 games per week would usually start 2 of them and would get maybe 7-8 at bats per week.
The HS coached asked him to play summers ball with the school team in some sort of school summer league. He was also asked to play in Connie Mack wood bat league. HS coach doesn't want him to do both but my son wants to try. He played with the summer team last year and it was kind of a mess maybe it will be better this year. The Connie Mack team is coached by coaches from a local junior college so I think it would be better than the HS team. Plus for what ever reason he seems to hit better with wood bat. We'll see how it goes.

My son hasn't had a hit (as I would score it) in three games, but he moved up in the batting order because he is knocking in runs, beating out throws on bobbled balls, or hitting it hard to fielders. So I agree with those who say (smart) coaches don't bench players who are getting on base and generally contributing offensively. The season is young here in New England, though. The good news: he's not worried. He's having a blast playing baseball.
The only thing you can control as a hitter is a solid approach, solid mechanics, swing a good pitches, and trying to square the ball up and hit it hard on every swing.
After that, the hitter has no control over what happens.

Yes! And the real answer to this thread (how to stop hitting the ball at the fielders) is; STOP HITTING and become a pitcher!
Good luck.
