My son was very fortunate to have his HS coach strongly advocate for him with college coaches. His coach spent many hours calling college coaches on both coasts and the Midwest, pulling every string he could to give my son a opportunity. Unfortunately, my son missed most of the past two HS seasons and key recruiting opportunities (invites to play in two PG World Series and other major showcases) due to four different injuries.
He went from one of the top prospects in our state as a freshman to among the masses of players just hoping for a chance to prove himself at the next level. While my son was actively contacting coaches, those that were interested before the injury filled their roster with healthy commits and emails to most other coaches seemed to get nothing but a cursory response and boilerplate invitations to prospect camps.
Solely from his HS coach’s efforts, my son did receive a very generous mid-level D1 offer but at a school that was not a good fit. His coach also helped him obtain a guaranteed walk on spot at another mid-level D1 at a high academic school my son would have considered without baseball. At least he will have a chance to prove himself if he can stay healthy.
My wife, son and I have thanked his coach verbally for his tremendous efforts whenever we have had a chance. What other appropriate actions could we take to show our deep appreciation?
