Tee work is the best. It is something a player can do on their own if there's nobody else around to flip or throw live, or even to put balls on the tee for them. By using a tee you can pin point selected areas that mechanics needs to be worked on. For instance, if the hitter is having trouble with the inside pitch, set the tee up like an inside pitch. Last season i had a problem of rolling my hands over too soon on inside pitches, resulting in a lot of ground balls. Set the tee up with that inside pitch everyday for a couple minutes and I eventually worked out of that problem. If it's away, set up the tee on the outside half of the plate. You can raise and lower tee's as well. A tee can be very specific to helping the mechanics of the swing at different points during the swing.
The T Gives the player a chance to concentrate on the basics of the swing. If a player only works with live pitching or a pitching machine they may start to develop a bad habit. The old saying goes TO Much of A Good Thing Is bad. Muscle Memory is the key. If you do'nt use the T to slow things down and concentrate on the Basics you will eventually develop a bad habit in your swing.
I have been fortunate to talk with some big leaguers off and on because my team used to play at Busch Stadium. Terry Pendleton took a T home almost every night. I talked with him one day and his statement was "how can you play ball and forget the basics?" Never forgot it.
