mikamom - I edited your quote so I could focus on the part that stood out but the whole post was one of the best I have read here on the hsbbweb.

For starters your son is obviously a leader and a WINNER. Terrell Owens spouted off the other day after the Cowboys lost that all he wants to do is play for/be a winner. He will never be a winner. He is way, way too selfish. Al Lerner the late billionaire owner of the Browns said he learned every thing he knew about leadership in the Marines. He said the saying the Marines used was "Leaders always eat last" - meaning they are always thinking about the group more than they are of themselves. I thought it was the best description of leadership that I had heard.

Your son in huge contrast to Owens, has already figured out what it takes to win. Fresno State last year won by being the most unselfish team in college baseball imho and before that it was Oregon State in that role. I predict your son has a bright future ahead of him.

Thank you CaBB and CD - it has been a difficult fall, and the surgery was scary for me, but it could have been much worse. The worst is the sitting around and waiting to figure out what was wrong.
It is interesting that this injury is fairly common in baseball players and golfers. I would guess catchers like mine are even more prone to it, what with catching balls thrown at them between 80 and 90 mph!
My advice is that if your son ever has pain in the fleshy part of his hand below the little finger, ask the question about the hamate. It actually was a very skilled physical therapist that suggested that may be the problem.
I hope he can make a contribution to the team this spring - he has no doubt that all will work out fine.
Fall for my son (Wofford College, small D1 in Spartanburg SC) went great. Most importantly he loves the school, teammates and classmates. Head Coach is young, energetic and innovative. Because academics come first at Wofford, they spent the month of September in the weight room and individual workouts --- a schedule that allows the freshman to get acclimated. Then when field practices began on October 1, they practiced at night under the lights so no one would miss a practice due to an afternoon lab. Baseball-wise, my son had a good fall and has an opportunity to start this spring. An OF/LHP he will also be called upon for some innings on the mound. This is exactly what he was hoping for... a chance to start and play both ways. Wofford has turned out to be a great fit for him. In addition to his teammates, he has made friends among other classmates (some through a bible fellowship) and it appears Wofford is delivering what they promise - an experience that will last a lifetime. It is a school and program I highly recommend to anyone. GO TERRIERS!

Natural - I have enjoyed all your posts on Wofford! You actually have me thinking about enrolling there for maybe some post-graduate work Big Grin

Seriously, your enthusiam (we all know ssmom is enthusiatic Big Grin ) is contagious and shared.

I do believe Wofford is recruiting high-level athletes. We are aware of a kid (Mac Doyle) whose cousin Dock played with my son. We have heard nothing but good things about Mac. Say hello to HiHardHeat for me if you meet him. He is a good guy who is THEE expert on southern baseball and colleges. Alas, our son's (his and mine) will not play each other this year Frown

All the best to your son and everyone else who has kids playing this spring Smile

Sons first JC game January 27,14 days and counting. they had their firt spring scrimmage Saturday and weather was beautiful.
My husband and I are as excited as SS mom. Just love Spring and baseball. What do we do when they are done playing? I think it will be a real adjustment for us.Hes almost 19 and has been playing for 14 years. For 14 years we have gone though this. And loved all of it(minus a few ll board meetings LOL).

My bad - your son is a senior this year?

Yes he is Natural and eagerly looking forward to it. In four years, you will be shaking your head at how fast the time has gone by Smile

Does Wofford use Internet video to televise their games? The Internet has been a Godsend for us. Last year, we were able to see almost all games we were unable to attend via the Internet or television broadcast. Even without video however, live audio is always good for baseball. For the hard core college parent, live stats is even a good thing Big Grin

I am hoping some of the parents who have kids starting before February 20th can post actively in here to get the baseball juices flowing again
I thought I'd chime in as mine experienced both success and a few surprises during the fall at the University of Georgia. He was recruited as an outfielder but to his surprise about a third way through the fall they wanted to look at him on the mound. Granted, he does throw really hard (in the 90's) but it was still a surprise. If that were not interesting enough then apprx. half way thru the fall they decided to slide him behind the plate. Now keep in mind, the whole time he's still doing all of his work with the outfielders in practice but now was double dipping in the fall also participating in the workouts for pitchers and catchers. I have to admit he was pretty exhausted at the end of every day but he was loving it.

As everyone is aware there was a lot of talk about all the freshman that were signed but I must give credit to those young freshman, they were not intimidated at all and came out in the fall during the pups vs. dawgs series, pups being the freshman and the dawgs being the rest of the team (returnees) and the pups simply destroyed the dawgs blowing them out in fact in several of their games. I was very pleased with what I saw talent wise and there is a lot of speed in that freshman group which will complement some of the power returning in the older fellas nicely.

In the end when the fall was complete Georgia also had sit down meetings w/ the players individually. However, Georgia does three evaluations on their players, they do a player self evaluation, their teammates do an evaluation on each other and then of course the coaches evaluation. In the end we were very excited as they informed him that he had made the 25-man travel squad as an outfielder and 3rd team catcher. They really love him behind the plate, they know he can play the outfield anytime, it'll be very interesting to see how the season unfolds. They have not promised him anything except that he'll have his opportunities to prove himself both in the outfield and behind the plate this season. It should be a very exciting year of baseball.

As an interesting side note to the above.....the GA coaches had no clue that my boy was a catcher all the way thru his freshman year in high school. In fact I don't know many that are aware of that, how interesting would it be that he goes back to his natural spot on the field even with all the success he's had in the outfield. The great thing is mine just wants to play, put him in the outfield he's ready, put him behind the plate he's ready, just put him in and he'll do what he has to do.

jbb and coach may good to hear your boys are doing well and I wish them all the best and best of luck to all the incoming freshman for a fun and exciting season ahead.
Way to go "j2 son"! It sounds like he had a great fall and you all have a lot to look forward to this spring. Wofford will visit Athens March 4 for a Wednesday night game with the Dawgs and we will be there, so drop by and say hello!

CleDad... yes, thankfully Wofford has internet coverage of their games --- it's called "TerrierVision". I watched some games last spring and it's pretty good. Certainly will come in handy when we can't make the trip!

35 DAYS AND COUNTING!!

Well mine had what I consider a great fall both on and off the field. He added 25 lbs of muscle and looks great. For those that don't know, my son is a freshman LHP, who I guess would have been "crafty." With the addition in muscle and weight and workouts, he has added velocity to go along with his "money pitch" changeup. Made 5 relief appearances in their world series games.

Academically, he wound up the fall with a 3.3 GPA which I was very happy with.

During his "meeting" coach told him he was way ahead of their schedule where they pictured him coming in. They praised him for his work on and off the field and he was rewarded for his efforts. I couldn't be more proud, but I reminded him that he still had alot of work to do and he needed to keep raising the bar. Looks like he will work out of the bullpen in a specialty role, but they anticipate alot of appearances for him if all goes well when practice starts.

Congratulations to all your sons on fine falls, alot of them I kept up with through their websites and fall games. It is exciting to see so many young men that you have seen play on a regular basis do so well! Feb. 20th is right around the corner and I look forward to keeping up with all your sons and wish them the best of luck and a great season.
