Generally would root for someone like Michael Young in almost all instances ... pro-labor bias more than pro-management. But $16 mil per year to be DH and get a decent amount of IF reps at 3 positions?? Mgt. is trying its best to bolster lineup considering no pitching was added. Hard to shed a tear for Young, regardless of what happened behind closed doors. Any of the smart baseball guys out there care to lay odds on a trade actually occurring? Hard to see ownership eating millions as no one else will pay near what he is making now. But it looks pretty messy ...
I tend to lean towards Bobby Boucher on this one. Nolan Ryan, Jon Daniels and Ron Washington have all assured Young that he will be the full-time DH with cameos at all 4 IF positions. He is a starter on the AL Champs.

It seems like he got his feelings hurt with the Mike Napoli acquisition. Are you kdding me, Young? You letting that get under your skin? And, when you peel back these position moves he did over the years, what choice did he have? Kinsler was a better 2nd baseman with better range, and Andrus is a WAY better SS with tremendous range. So him "volunteering" to move wasn't all that noble....there were better players there.

I like Young and think he is a solid player, but he is $16 million/year for the next three years and his production is worth maybe half that.

It is JD's job to make the team better, and without Cliff Lee, he had to do what he could offensively, and he did that. Looks to me like the team captain would be pleased about that.

Exactly!

Yeah get your spikes out and put a new coat of polish on them, head west on I-20 to I-10 to Surprise, and go to WORK! Quit being a Diva. Maybe he just needs a Snickers! Moving to another team would be a big mistake for Young.
It started when they overpaid him to begin with, that contract was a lot for an out of place SS (b/c of the Soriano switch) which then turned out to be an even more out of place 3B. Now, Texas is left with an expensive utility player.

I don't see how he can act like it isn't a business in regards to his comments in that article. Does he really believe he is above the team making moves to improve the few holes and weaknesses in the lineup just because he has tenure? That nonsense is such a beating with me just like the Jeter situation - organizations are built from decision points forward, not from where the heart was 7 years ago.
I agree with the consensus here. It's really too bad that Young is pulling this now, towards the end of a career that has been marked with nothing but class since he started playing with the Rangers.

He has taken all of his "moves" in stride (at least publicly, and presumably in the locker room, as he has garnered a ton of respect from his teammates and coaches).

This appears just plain selfish on the outside, especially given his age/salary/potential contribution to the team.

And while I understand all athletes have an ego, to some degree, and I cannot get inside his head... here's one perspective. If he were to embrace this "Super Utility/DH" role, he would have an opportunity to revolutionize the DH position. It's possible he could put a stamp on his career that would define it much more than what he has even done to this point (its been a very good career, but certainly not a HOF career). The DH position is looked at with disdain by many baseball purists...but you throw a guy in there who can literally play every INF position, and probably some LF too, and play _everyday_, get 600ABs, stay healthy, etc... you have completely changed the position. You give your team an advantage all year long, especially when injuries are a big part of the game (e.g.: Kinsler... anyone think he will actually play more than 110-120 games at 2B?). Instead of filling the position with a Blanco or Arias, you install Young. That's a big upgrade, in my mind.

In the post-steroid era, Young has a chance to potentially change the way teams go shopping for a DH in the AL. While this isn't of any monetary benefit to him probably, it's still something profound... and he could keep his "nice guy/team player" tag he's always been known for.

If he gets traded, it only hurts himself and the Rangers, I believe.

Now this comes out the Rangers are talking to the Phillies about a Young for Blanton deal. Do that in a NY minute if you're the Rangers...but why would the Phillies do that? Surely the Rangers would have to throw in A LOT more.

They may not. Both have bloated salaries and the Phillies don't really need Blanton with the acquisition of Lee. Might be something to watch.
OD,Well I know there is some pretty big hats there in your neighborhood. And some booster's that can over fill it. Wink

They will be alright. But not as good as HP from what I've heard from my early scouting reports. Hear they can swing it. Must be the bat's. Haha Cool

Save me a seat at Scotland Yard. I have a lot of free time this season during the week. Think I could get season tickets next to W. Miller? Big Grin

I'd like to see the Braves go after him.

On paper, the Braves have Chipper, Gonzalez, Prado and Freeman starting across the diamond. But Freeman is an unproven rookie, Chipper is injury prone and aging, and really anyone can get hurt from time to time. Prado missed some time last year. Young might be an upgrade from Gonzalez anyway.

Given that Young could handle any of those positions at any time, I'd love to see that pickup.
