Unless I'm reading this wrong, it looks like the NFHS is going to render obsolete a lot of bats.
The new standard, BBCOR, replaces BESR, and is discussed in the press release from NFHS ( http://www.nfhs.org/content.as...=2772&terms=baseball ) and states in part:
"The new rule also states that non-wood bats must be labeled with a rectangular certification mark “a minimum of a half-inch on each side and located on the barrel of the bat in any contrasting color.” The new standard ensures that performances by non-wood bats are more comparable to those of wood bats. It’s also expected to minimize risk, improve play and increase teaching opportunities."
I take this to mean bats carrying the (current) BESR standard will not be allowed in HS play in 2010. Only bats with the certification mark for BBCOR are in.
What am I missing?

Well, we know the shelf-life of new bats is counting down from 2 yrs starting in Jan. It will be interesting to see how bat makers will deal with the shrinking useful life of "old standard" new bats. I guess there will be a run on the oldies now to get at least 2yrs out of them.
From reading the press release on the rules, it looks like the 2012 bats will need to carry the certification stamp for the BBCOR standard, vs. the BESR stamp that manufacturers put on bats now.
The assumption behind all this is that the new bats will be "tamper-proof" when leaving the factory - so rolling the bat, or a lot of normal use, will not change its performance.
A further assumption is that the "old standard" bats that are broken-in will provide an advantage, as they do now, until the 2012 bats are available. One would have to conclude that hitters will stick with what they have, until 2012. Assume also, that the rules will be static on bats until 2012, so using anything other than a BESR bat will be illegal.
I think scouts will know a good swing when they see it no matter what the stick is made of.
