Most sports have their own type of lighter weight jacket, but football still has the leather/faux leather sleeved heavy jacket - we won our league last year, so the school board chipped in some, but it still cost us about $50. And the kids wear them all the time; I suspect it will disappear into the bowels of his closet upon spring and his graduation. Have seen a couple seniors from last years champioship team wear them to someof the hoem games this year, but other wise they get locked away, as per everyone else's point.

Nowadays no one around here seems to even own one.

When did letter jackets go out, and why?

Thought it might be fun to revisit this post. Son is HS Freshman & Dad told him he can get his jacket as soon as he 'Letters'. Daughter is a Jr in HS she has her Lettermans jacket with her cheerleading letters as well as her Wrestling and Track Boys Varsity Team Manager Letters.

Are these jackets out or are they slowly coming back?
Son never wanted one at his private school, but when he transferred to a public school with the best BB program in the city, he was eager to get one. He along with all his teammates wore their jackets to school almost every day during the winter. The jackets came in handy in the dugout as well when games started in early February - Brrr!
I've got one. Really about the only time I wore it was during basketball season junior and senior year. I wouldn't wear it for football because you never knew what the lockerroom would be like and it was just too hot to wear during baseball season. Also, I wouldn't wear it to school because I didn't want to stuff it into my locker with everything else.

Someone earlier had asked about class rings.. I got mine sophomore year and wore it for about 2 months. Then I wore it for special occasions only. I probably have not worn it since high school graduation May 2007.
The most expensive after-highschool moth magnet I ever bought. Big Grin

( Seriously though, my boys loved theirs in highschool and wore them with pride. One of my favorite pictures is of the two of them with their backs facing me as they walked into the locker room before a big game. The same last name displayed proudly on their backs,...on a varsity team together,..side by side.) Fun memories.

Living in Florida son got the letter minus the jacket.
Anyone want a never worn Clemson letter jacket? Big Grin
I think that son might have worn it being in cooler weather, but it is the UGLIEST thing I have ever seen. They spend so much money on these things, make them fashionable at least. And it's not 'cause it is purple and orange.
I think he got more use out of his second year letter award......coasters. Roll Eyes

Very popular at son's high school. The school supplies the jacket and parents supply the patches. The jackets are identical for every sport, it is not just for football. They receive their jacket the year after they letter whether it be football, baseball, track, basketball. The students receive academic jackets and bars from our parish school board. To receive an academic jacket you must have a 4.0 two semesters in a row, then a bar is given for every semester after that. My son wears his athletic jacket every chance he gets but has never worn his academic jacket, go figure.
OK, so please forgive the "brag." We're getting the daughter one for Christmas. She doesn't know that her coach has given me her "All Conference" Patch, "Conference Champs" patch and her "Regional Champs" patch. We're going to have it all sewn on along with her Letter that I've snatched. Besides, we're going to get a few more years of her wearing it. She just a soph and lettered this past spring as a frosh. OK I'm a proud papa.
