In HS I know that a starter may be substituted for and return to the game once. However, is this next scenario legal/possible?

Batter number 2 is subbed for by X. Two innings later, batter number 2 returns to the game, but batter 7 is then subbed for. Sub X then drops in the order to the 7 hole......Is that correct/possible/legal?

Saw it done in a Summer league game following HS rules.

So basically player X subbed in for batter number 2 and then batter number 7?

If that's the case then that is not legal under NFHS rules. Once you enter into the batting lineup then you are in that spot only. You cannot move around from one spot to another. A starter can re-enter once but a sub cannot. So in your situation batter number 2 was a legal re-entry but once he came back in that means player X was done for the game. X cannot enter back into the game at all.

Just for future reference though there is an umpires forum for rules questions like this. Got a bunch of very knowledgable guys who can answer your questions.
Coach is correct. However, I'll offer up a consideration...
In our area, the HS summer program is run very loosely regarding substitution - a gentleman's agreement between the coaches. The purpose of the summer program is getting game reps, ab's, innings pitched, looks at incoming underclassmen, players in different positions, etc. Winning and strict rules enforcement take a back seat here. Strange things happen often. i.e. - you may see football kids show up after their workouts and get in a few innings. They may bat once in the 6th and then leapfrog in the lineup to get another AB in the 7th. You may see a full 7 inning game even if the home team is winning or you may see a game only go 6 if a team runs out of pitching for that day. A hitter may skip an AB to get loose in the bullpen to take the mound next inning. There is a lot of head scratching by the parents, particularly those that don't find the earlier parent meetings worth attending Smile.

Thanks Coach 2709. I thought about posting in the umpires forum, but ultimately decided to post here because I figured you more experienced coaches have a real good grasp and understanding of HS substitutions. Thanks for politely recommending a different forum.

@Cabbagedad: that's possibly what was going on in this Summer league because they were also batting 11 players, when HS typically bat a max of 10.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm just a dad who coached my son at the youth level and now that he's playing in HS I'm learning the game on a more advanced level by sitting in the stands. This website has helped immensely in that process. Very knowledgeable gentlemen on here.
