What class year is he?

Congrats to the kid on a great outing.  But before you get all excited, bear in mind that there are probably 75 pitchers in the state who can hit 86 mph or better from time to time.  Probably 30 who do it consistently.

Might well be a big time prospect, I can't say, never seen him.  But the 86 alone isn't all that much.

Unfortunately Prince Edward is a bit out of my range for taking in games!

To be clear, I'm not dumping on the kid.  He may be a great prospect.  I truly don't know.

All I can say is, the 86 alone doesn't make me want to drive 90 minutes each way to see him play.

I did find something on line indicating that he's a junior (2015).  That helps.  A kid that age who sits 82 and peaks at 86 could be the guy sitting 87-88 and peaking at 90-92 in a year or two.  (Or, he might not get there; you sometimes just have to wait and see.)  If he were a senior, he'd be that much closer to his physical peak.  Conversely, a sophomore at that level would raise more eyebrows.

But there are a surprising number of guys, especially RHP's, in that velocity grouping.  Some make it, some don't.  We have guys like this on the Cardinals right now.  But we've also cut guys in that range, too.  The differentiating factors will be his secondary stuff, command, competitiveness, poise, behavior and ... grades, SAT's, etc.

Now, if he were a LEFTY ....
