Does anyone know the ruling on this. Lets say a kid does not end up with enough credits to graduate after 4 years in High School and has to attend a 5th year. Can he play baseball that 5th year if he does not turn 18 until after the 5th year is complete? I have heard you are eligible until you turn 19.

Brock Mansion at ESD was able to do that or something similar...I don't think you can under UIL or TAPPS (you can't have more than 4 years of HS eligibility for UIL and TAPPS) but the governing body for ESD (SPC, Southwest Preparatory Conference) has provisions for it if you don't have all the credits they require for graduation.

There was an article on this in the DMN awhile back, seems like he was able to go from Plano HS to ESD and somehow have 5 years of eligibility...if you do a search on his name on the DMN website you can probably find it. His was primarily for football but he also plays baseball.

Check the UIL site, but I am fairly certain he won't be able to play his senior year...there are appeal options to try.

It looks like the UiL has modified this rule. This directly from the UiL site:

"...are enrolled in a four year, normal program of high school courses, and initially enrolled in the 9th grade not more than 4 years ago nor in the 10th grade not more than 3 years ago,..."

So it looks like your buddy's kid in good to go.
