I am not going to watch the WBC. I am NOT going to watch the WBC. Those players should be in camp and baseball should be baseball the way its always been.

I've been saying that for weeks. So what happens this morning? I get my coffee and sit down to catch the weather before heading off to work and the television comes up on ESPN2, and there in full color is a baseball game - Japan vs China - in the top of the 8th with the score Japan 16, China 2 - and no outs. My baseball addiction is apparently very strong because I could not rip my eyes away from the set. I am soooo ashamed... boredom

Explain this:

There were more press credentials issued for the WBC than for the Winter Olympics, yet baseball was voted out of the Olympics, mainly as an anti-American move, or so the conventional wisdom says.

Perhaps if we cut off aid to every country voting against baseball, or maybe a small bombing run, putting potholes in their s*o*c*c*e*r* fields, would send the appropriate message.... Big Grin
I have a feeling that the players playing in the WBC would FAR rather be playing games than practicing bunt coverage. IMHO, the need for spring training has changed drastically. In the past, professional players may have needed spring training to "get back" into shape after a winter off working their second job selling cars (Phil Rizzuto) or working at a maitre 'd at a restaurant (Yogi Berra) or just sitting around. Now, with professional baseball being the full time job that it is, there is less need for that (one would hope) and more need for just fine tuning.
Well, I certainly would not want to see MLB players in the Olympics. Rather see a good college all-star squad. Same forNHL/hockey. And NBA/bassketball.

The WBC will be interesting, heck, I can get rivetted to a LL game, particularly after a long winter! I don't really like the idea/timing of it, but IT'S BASEBALL! Once the teams are on the field . . .
Every time I think of the WBC, the Summer Olympics and the "Dream Team's" come to mind ....

... I would rather the Olympics go back to amateurs, but that's not going to happen either. Since they've gone pro, I don't pay much attention to them.

The WBC will be good this year ... and I'm afraid it's going to go downhill since:
1). The games are meaningless
2). The top players will stay in camp

Once it turns into another version of the "Dream Team", everyone will realize it's a bad idea and it will fade into the sunset ... IF they can keep that from happening, then it will do Ok.

After all, it's baseball, and I still watch every spring training game I can, regardless of score, who's playing or anything else.
I don't like the WBC for the reason of its all Major Leaguers. How is this any diff than a regular MLB game? Look, if you a getting paid to play in America, then you play for America. Simple as that. Play in your own country during the year! Why do you have to come here and play? For the Olympics, it is sort of like the countries best they have vs. another countries. It is a feeling of "we are the best". With the WBC, I know players on every team, it isn't the same nationalistic feeling.
