My original question was whether I would appear to suck up to the varsity head coach if I complimented an assistant varsity coach for his tremendous work on behalf of my middle school son.  The assistant coach is a great person who has made a very big impact on my son, not only in how he hits a baseball but also in how he approaches school.  I don't want to over think it so I am going to go ahead and send a note to the head coach.  He should know, if doesn't already, what a tremendous asset he has on his coaching staff.  No one knows where anyone will be when my son hits high school so sucking up is not really an issue.  Compliments are too rarely given.  I was not a baseball player growing up and my son has learned to love the game based on his experiences and the coaches he met along the way.  This has certainly been an unforeseen benefit of him playing baseball.
