Soooooo.....
First game of the Pony season last night (13 & 14). My 1st game as a manager (ever).

We won. 9-4. HOWEVER...My 2 pitchers threw a combined no-hitter! (1 walk each).

Happy with the win (of course)
Happy with the pitchers (of course)

The rest? I'm nervous.

I only have 3 pitchers, so these 2 guys will always be pitching, as my 3rd can't last long, so I guess that is some solace.

Oh well,
1-0 still looks good.

Good luck Coach!

Read some of the comments on this site about pitch counts and protecting the boys' arms. Be cognizant of the fact that while you only have 2 perhaps 3 pitchers to count on, you have to resist the temptation to overuse them. I'd try to develop another pitcher or two, even one or two you can use in a blow-out game (either way)

Fortunately...75% of the errors were mental (well, when you get down to it, ALL errors are mental). Not paying attention to signs, being overly aggressive on throws, and a LOT of dropped 3rd strike errors.

Pitch count was 70 & 27, respectively. 1st pitcher was actually doing well with 2 out in the 4th, but went full count with a lot of fouls, then a few dropped 3rd strikes, etc...
He really wanted to finish off the inning, and his arm wasn't hurting or dropping in velocity, so I let him finish with 70, instead of pulling him at 55 or so.

I wish I had more pitchers...I only have 4 who have even the most remote desire to try pitching. The 4th will definitely be used only in blow-outs (either way Wink)

Amazing. Normally almost everybody wants to pitch, our team currently has 9 kids who want to. Could you try talking to a couple of the other kids who have good arms and ask if they'd consider pitching from time to time? Ditto the previous comments about being careful with pitch counts.
Yup...
I practically begged all the players to at least try to throw off the mound in practice...no dice.

Bobble...
no..not tournies. This is just rec ball. My son has played for a couple of years on a travel team, so I am very well aware of tournaments.

I am focusing solely on having fun. My son is a very good player, and an excellent pitcher (he was the 27 pitch count), but on his travel team, he only got to pitch, and usually batted at the end of the order. If he didn't pitch, he was sitting out. We moved to rec ball to get him some on-field leadership experience. Hopefully this gives him a more well-rounded exposure to baseball, and gets him more mature when he gets to high school in another couple of years.

The talent level in rec ball is not what he is used to, but he enjoys pitching and playing middle infield. He also had a triple and a double the other night playing in the 2-spot. His confidence level is zooming right now, and as everyone knows, this game is mostly between the ears!
