Well, I thought I’d tried just about everything when it came to keeping score and doing the stats for a HS baseball team, but of course I wuz WRONG!!!!!!

We started our league play this week, and the weather’s been ugly with a capital UG! We were scheduled for Tues, Thurs, and Sat, and managed to get the Tues game in before the skies opened up. With the weather report saying there was 100% chance of rain on Wed, Thur, and Fri, and it having rained all day on Wed, and skies as black as coal all day yesterday, there was little hope of playing.

Everyone was hoping, but at 12:06 the email saying the game was cancelled came. Then, about 6 o’clock I got a call from the coach telling me they’d pulled the tarp and the field was pretty good, so they worked for a couple hours, re-notified everyone, and the game got started at the scheduled time. They got in 5 innings before the skies opened up and everyone got drenched, but our team was ahead, they’d played the required number of innings to make the game official.

Now comes the problem. Nobody on our side thought to keep score! So, the only thing available for me right now, are the little 3x6 cards the coach keeps, and they’re about as useless for compiling stats as teats on a boar hog! But, they are better than nothing, and should give me at bats and hits for the offense, and the same for the pitchers.

My hope is, the opposing coach had someone keep score for his team, and I can get my hands on their book or get a copy of the scoresheet. That won’t be perfect, but at least I’ll be able to get everything done. Now for the best part.

This morning I fired up the computer, and checked my e-mail. There are 3 messages saying I’d forgotten to call the score in to the paper! Its freakin’ 5:15 in the morning, and there are already people hot on my trail! In order to dodge the bullet of not having posted the stats, I put out a newsletter explaining that I wasn’t at the game and would do the best I could as soon as I could about the numbers.

And to think I used to pi$$ and moan about not getting the subs! Smile

Got what I needed from the opposing coach. Their scorer even had a system for marking called and swinging strikes, so that was a big help too. Unfortunately, she didn’t mark 1st pitch strikes, but hey, what I got is a heck of a lot better than what I had. I just punched in the game as though I was watching it, and viola, end of problem. Wink

I found out something else too. It seems our coach’s cards are pretty good, but he got the plays wrong on about 6 of the plays, and that’s just who the players were, not whether they were hits or errors. And that pretty much proves what I’ve been trying to tell the coach now for almost 7 years. No matter what he thinks, its pretty much impossible to keep records of the hitters and pitchers on notecards as the game’s going on!

Yes, you can do a pretty good job, but it will never be as good a job as the person who’s doing nothing other than scoring the game does, and that’s the difference between accurate numbers you can use to make good decisions with, and the kinds of numbers people know are at best just ok.
