So the summer is starting up and next year is my junior year of HS... All my friends are playing on summer ball teams that goes to Perfect Game, Baseball Factory, Prospect Wire, etc. Also all of these friends of mine, their parents are paying $1000-$3000.

My mom cant really pay for all that so any money that's going to any of these expensive showcase teams has to come from me working at Publix over the summer(Hopefully I can save enough to where I can get on a team next summer)

Anyways is there any suggestions on specific teams or showcases I should save $$ for?? Is this a good idea??

I would recommend trying out for as many different teams as you can find in your area.  Show your skills.  Then explain your financial sItuation to them.  Some teams/programs might not have any options for you, but others might... You just need to find one.  Also, is there not a league in your area that you could join to play ball this summer?  If you really want to play baseball, my experience is that there's usually an option to be found.  Ask around to as many coaches as possible, starting with your local HS head coach.  They should be able to point you toward some possibilities.  Good luck!

Summer ball with the HS team here is ~$100-150 for 20-30 games. It's mostly JV/Freshman level ball talent wise, but there are rising juniors that play on occasion for the reps and one or two who make it their primary summer baseball experience, so that might be an option

You're probably not going to find a lot of teams playing PG types of events that are on the really cheap end, but there are at least some out there that will help out on the costs in one way or another. At levels below that, at least around here, there are some lower level teams, and it ought to be possible to field such a team for well under $1000/player, but I don't know how common that is.

It is my understanding that PG will try to place individual players with teams for some of the events.  If you think your game is ready to show at a high profile event, it may be worth contacting them for details.

BTW, down the road, you are going to be grateful to your mom for putting you in the position to earn some of the things you really want (if you aren't already).

Not sure if it pertains to this discussion, but many of the top players in the country are playing on the top teams, without paying a dime.  There are also teams that are fully funded and don't charge anything to the players. For the most part, the teams that play in PG events are a lot less expensive than most.  It's not the best players that are funding Travel Baseball.  And it's actually the travel itself that becomes the biggest expense.

No disrespect for any showcase sanctions, however this is what I hate about baseball.  I know top teams will scholly top players, however there are some proud families out there that feel embarrassed not paying....not to mention, these schollys are typically available for only the top talent.

Something few like to discuss, however baseball has been trending towards a "country club" select few.... I know there are initiatives like RBI, although I don't think those programs have been even close to what MLB had hoped for.

When my son was enteriong his senior year in HS his summer travel team costs were 2500-3000.  That was a while ago and back then that was a LOT of money. However, if the Coach felt that the player had potential to play at that level and needed financial plans, they had a program to pay for your fee. You could also get a sponsorship.

I admire that you are working to help pay for your fees, my son worked in HS (because he wanted to) and he got almost a full scholarhip to go to college. He also got sponsorship for many of the teams he played for, as many were out of state and that is what drives the cost.

Best of luck to you, hopefully that oldmanmoses can help you with a hookup!

See here is the problem... Kids think that if you aren't spending thousands of dollars a season to play then the competition you are playing isn't good enough. Here is the thing... if you want to play ball... then find somewhere to play ball. You don't have to play on travel teams and have 4 uniform sets. Go to your local athletic association and see if they have high school leagues. Find an American Legion program. Most importantly... just play the game.

My son is your age and where we live there are NO summer teams. so what is he doing? busting his ass everyday this summer hitting off tee, throwing and getting stronger and faster. You cant do anything about financial issues outside your control but make the best of your time and dedicate to get better. And grades, this coming year is crucial for your tests do not take them lightly.

I'm pretty sure the hall of fame is filled with guys who did not play travel ball.

ok here I go

Money money money. Seems like today if you do not have the sets of uniforms and the BP jersey and all the gizmos and gadgets you will be left behind.

I was just glad I had a couple of baseballs and a fungo money for umpires and a bus for an away game.

I go to a game and see a player in his fancy uniform not able to put a bunt down. A pitcher who can not throw strikes. An outfielder who misses the cut off man allowing a runner to get to scoring position. But they look good doing it?
