I would like to congratulate all the high school athletes who competed in this years IHSA Bass Fishing State Championship this weekend. I’m sure all the hard work and training paid off. And now the state of Illinois is the first to sanction such an event, I guess Minnesota with 10,000 lakes is embarrassed.

I know I might take some heat from this (especially from our moderator, I know what side of the boat he might side with) but really is the IHSA serious? They have screwed up switching from 2 class to 4 class; all they do now is buy more trophies. And know awarding schools for showing up 2 weekends to throw a worm on a hook, what message dose that send to the kids and coaches through out the state that are working hard to achieve a goal?

Elite 8 means the best 8 teams; the best 8 teams should make it to state. If you are going to adjust the class than adjust the tournament venue to include the best 8 teams from each class. That way more athletes get to experience the state championship, not just show up for 2 weekends!!!

You would be surprised which side of this fight I'd take up. Having been a professional fisherman for about 17 years, I understand what tournament fishing is all about...selling boats, motors, rods, reels, lines and baits. I believe that tournament fishing without a cash purse is like having a baseball game and not keeping score.

If tournament fishing belongs in high school sports, then let the people who benefit most from it, the manufacturers, sponsor its activities.

Just my humble, professional, opinion.
Our school placed in the top 10 in the state in bass fishing. As a small school this is quite an accomplishment and we are very proud of our local anglers. Talk up at the coffee shop was the coach left a good caster on the shore but it looks to have worked out for the better. We had an all school assembly last week to celebrate this accomplishment and the gym was really rocking. I felt kind of bad for all the dead fish that were on display but I guess they were the reason for the celebration!
