I play on a local area summer team that is coached by a really good friend and long time coach of mine. He is a very good coach and has taught me alot about the game. We play mainly against 18u teams and playing kids that are 2 years older than me has helped me improve immensely. The only problem is that our schedule includes nothing but local tournaments that do not have any college coaches at them. As a 2013, I am aware that next summer is my big recruiting summer. That being said, I feel like I need to get on a more well known team for next summer that plays in many of the heavily scouted tournaments. Despite this, I don't want my friend and long time coach to feel like I am betraying him by not playing on his team next summer. I know he has my best interest in mind, but it seems like it would be hard to get recruited without any coaches ever seeing me play. Any thoughts?

Dlock...your loyalty to your friend and coach is to be admired. I love seeing that in a young ball player.

But with that being said, I'm afraid you're right about next summer being a very important summer in regards to recruiting. Just like bee's flock to honey so do Scout's to baseball games where talent is.

If your friend and coach cares for you like I think he does, I am quite sure he will understand. You may even sit down with him after this summer and have a frank and honest discussion with him. Whether there is support or not you have to make a tough decision that is best for you and your future. No one can fault anyone for that. ('cept Lebron James lol).

Seriously, I would have that discussion and then this fall begin earnestly looking for that team that will get you in front of scouts and recruiters next summer.

Good luck young man.
Yeah, in fact, if he is coaching the 18u scene, he should be very aware that a better player will need to join a team that will get more exposure and, in fact, encourage you to do so. He may even be able to help you. That conversation should not be nearly as hard as you are thinking it will be. A good friend and mentor will have your best interest at heart and that is definitely in your best interest.

Also, I know in our area, a few of the higher level travel teams have summer and fall programs and release the players that are off to college after summer, so fall can be a great "join" opportunity. Start investigating right now.
Good luck.

DLOCK15,

This is one of many tough life decisions you have to make as a young man. How you handle it says alot about you and your character. Your coach and friend should understand your situation better than anyone, and he may be willing to help you find the best situation and exposure to get to the next level. Be straight and honest with him, and I think it will be an easier discussion than you think as others have suggested. IMHO, selecting where you go to college & play baseball is definetly a top 3 life decision. Good luck in your recruiting efforts.
