My son is a 2008 RHP, He knows what major he wants to take at college and it is going to limit his college choices due to his playing ability. What I mean is, all major DI schools offer his major, he has been told he has the ability to play high DII, and maybe low DI. In the insterest of playing time he is more interested in playing DII or even DIII. The number of DII and DIII schools with his major, that are in our area are limited. He has a list of schools he is interested in DI, DII, and DIII and he wants to send a letter to the coaches just to make an initial contact. Our question is; Should the letter be sent via US Mail, is an E-Mail OK or does it not really matter? Replies from Coaches as well as players/parents with experience, or just your oppinions are welcome.

My son is an '07 grad so at this time last year we were doing the same thing. He send approx. seventy-five letters to coaches of all divisions expressing interest in their program. The list is now down to three, all D-III. I won't go through the entire grueling year with you but that's just the way it ended up. We sent them out U.S. Mail, all done on the word processor (except the signature), AND they were all personalized. Don't send the same generic letter out to every coach, they'll pick up on that right away. There's a great section on the process on this site somewhere. Sending them all U.S. Mail was a lot of work, stuffing envelopes, stamps, paper cuts, ect...but at the time I didn't trust that every coach was diligent about checking email. We have found though that most do check email. Like I say, it was a grueling year, but it was interesting and sort of fun at the same time. His list is narrowed down to three DIII schools and he knows he'll be happy playing for any of them. Good luck!
I know that wasn't meant as a jab at my son's talent level. Smile Truth of the matter is, after watching a couple of DIII games this fall, there's no question my son will play and play well there. Also without question is the fact that he could play at a higher level. Sometimes the system doesn't work perfectly. But, like I said, all three of his final choices are places that he's going to be very happy at.
