Maybe I need to check the College Baseball Web...
To make a long story short...Just got a lot of paperwork to fill out for my son's athletic clearance to play D-1 baseball in September...bigest question/statement was my insurance will be primary and the University will be secondary.. No big deal realy since I have Kaiser..But I was kind of surprised
is this normal? he was given an Athletic Scholly but the financial aid is worth more so we need to decide that too...any comments or insights?
thanks

Yes, your insurance will be primary and the athletic department's will be secondary. I'm not positive, but I believe the athletic department's insurance normally covers any kind of deductible or co-pay your insurance may require.

Per NCAA rules, the athletic department's insurance can only be used for athletic injuries. Illness and non-athletic injuries (such as playing basketball in the Rec Center!) cannot be covered by the athletic department..
It can vary from college to college so you may have to do some digging around to find the best answer for your situation. Are there Kaiser facilities near your sons college? If not how would he use your medical insurance and would Kaiser cover the costs if he had to go some where else?

Do you have a deductible and if so how large is it? All colleges offer health insurance for their students but it may be more expensive than what you pay for your Kaiser coverage. But if no Kaiser nearby that may be your best option.

If your son is injured while playing baseball the college will probably send him to their team doctor at no cost to you. My son had surgery this season but we choose to have him come home and use a local surgeon so our insurance covered the costs but we paid our deductible. He is back at school and they are covering all the physicalmtherapy costs.

Each athletic dept/college has their own procedures so it would be wise to ask before anything comes up.

You have to show proof, if on any type of athletic scholarship that if your son had to go to the hospital for anything he has insurance and for anything unrelated to baseball. Some prgrams will pay for any baseball injury whether you have insurance or not, and will pick up all costs that your insurance will not.

We paid, each semester, a fee of 200 (required as a student) that covered just about anything son saw team doctor for, from asthma medication to over the counter meds.

You can place a call into the athletic department and they will let you speak to the person in charge of that for explanation of what they take care of and what they don't. We actually dropped son from our family policy his second and third year and bought in state (where he was) insurance for hospitalization.
Thanks guys... I was just thrown for a loop at the request. looks like even though my "Kaiser" is first in line, and yes there is one close to the school and luckily there is no deductibles. But the info i gathered from the school and friends is that the school will pay for everything the first doesn't . that includes deductibles, follow-ups etc. should be no cost out of my pocket once so ever...
Makes Collegiate baseball that much better

It definatly varies by school. My son also had Kaiser, however at school #3 he never used his Kaiser coverage as he used the on campus clinic and AD doctor. We didn't hsve to pay for anything at school #3. The nearest Kaiser was 500 miles away.

At school #1 he had to use the local emergency room (non-Kaiser) and the 1st school made us buy supplemental insurance for him due to Kaiser being over 50 miles away, I can't remember if we had to pay the deductable for the ER visit.

At school #3 they had a legit football program and resources to draw on, school #1 didn't have a football team and related resources.
