I'd say "No catch!" while giving the safe mechanic. The exception would be if it were a foul ball, in which I'd say "Foul!" and give the proper mechanic.

The purpose of the rule is to prevent a double play. It's generally accepted that a line drive or short fly in the infield would probably not give BR enough time to make it to 1B before an infielder can intentionally drop the ball, throw to (presumably) 2B for the force, and then relay to 1B. With most hits to the outfield, the time would generally be significantly longer, so BR would have a chance to reach 1B.

Would it not depend on where the OF is?  Just because he is an OF, does not mean the runners are protected.   ie:  0 out runners on 1st and 2nd... last inning OF playing in... blooper over 3B/SS to short LF...intentional drop could get runner at 3rd and 2nd for DP.  Remember the IFF call in the world series?  It is bot a judgement call, protect the runners?

NewUmpire, Rule 2-13 specifically states who infielders and outfielders are. Therefore, no matter the location of a fielder, their position is set.

As for the IFF in the NLCS, that was an infielder (the shortstop) tracking a ball into the outfield area of the field. Since it was an infielder AND he could have caught the ball under reasonable effort, it was an infield fly.
