From a statistical standpoint it might not matter, but from a mental standpoint it might matter a lot. I think early wins set a tone for the rest of the run and provide a confidence boost.

A game that "doesn't matter" statistically is useful to acknowledge that way only because it probably helps determine who is put on the mound and who is held back for a more crucial game.
I thought most all the posts have agreed that it's far better to win than lose. Losing isn't really hunky-dory and let's throw a party, but if you do happen to lose the first game of a series (for some reason) it doesn't mean the end of the road for your team.

Losing stinks, no matter what round you're in, but if you do lose (somebody's going to), I suppose it's better to have it happen in first round rather than the last!
