Interesting statement

Nope..Every win closer to 4 is big. I never like to give up games.

It's like how some say losing in April no big whoop but teams in a dogfight in Sept could have an easier time and rest tired starters had they won all those April games that weren't important.

And this is worthy of a post because....??

I've always like Bob Knight's line about "a good loss."

Knight: I don't believe it good losses. What's so good about losing? If losing once is a good loss, why not lose five and really build the program.

I think that winning the first game can set the tone for the entire series. It can force the loser of the first game to feel the pressure....

From a statistical standpoint it might not matter, but from a mental standpoint it might matter a lot. I think early wins set a tone for the rest of the run and provide a confidence boost.

A game that "doesn't matter" statistically is useful to acknowledge that way only because it probably helps determine who is put on the mound and who is held back for a more crucial game.

I would generally agree with that statement. Although it is never good to lose, losing the first game still gives you plenty of time to settle in and get on track.
It is always important to win the last game however!!

Losing the first game of the series might help to not get to the final and 7th game

I guess if the team that wins the last game lost the first, then it doesn't matter.

Let's hope the Hurricanes aren't too upset about a first game loss.

A loss is a loss.

You are now down 0-1.

You have less margin for error.

You now have to win 4 of 6 or go play golf.

The opposing team only has to win 3 of 6.

All teams at that point are capable of winning 3 of 6 against anyone, or they wouldn't still be playing.

it's like being down early in a game. Not time to panic, lots of game yet to be played, but at the end of the game team with most runs wins.

I thought most all the posts have agreed that it's far better to win than lose. Losing isn't really hunky-dory and let's throw a party, but if you do happen to lose the first game of a series (for some reason) it doesn't mean the end of the road for your team.

Losing stinks, no matter what round you're in, but if you do lose (somebody's going to), I suppose it's better to have it happen in first round rather than the last!

By the way, they're down 2-1 to Vancouver.

I think that saying it is "not all that important" to win the first game in a seven game series is an odd statement.

Now, if the statement were that it is not as important as winning the first game in a five game series, I would agree.

But saying it isn't "all that important" is an odd statement.

That's easy to buy into after the fact and your team won the series but when you play game #1 and don't know the final result of the series yet, that win IS important.
