Runner on second, ball is batted, runner and shortstop collide, the ball goes behind the runner and fielded by the centerfielder on shortstop side of second base in the grass. Is the runner out?
Unless there was something I can't forsee in your post, the answer is yes... the runner is out for interference. The runner must avoid the fielder.....
If, in the judgment of the umpire, the shortstop had a reasonable chance of fielding the ball, the runner is out for interference..........
If the umpire judged that the fielder had no chance then all we might have had was incidental contact......but from the sound of it, the umpire in your case decided that the play could have been made and the contact was interference....
Actually the ump had no idea what to call, unfortunately he let the coach influence him. Others I talked to who were at the game later said it was a judgement call and the ss had little chance to get to it. Thanks for your help. That's the way the game goes sometimes.
If the ball went behind the runner and the SS had no shot at it, then it's possible that you had an obstruction. On the other hand it could very well be nothing.
