Last night, we had a game, and I hit a shot into deep right field, right in the gap, and as I was going around first, I ran into the first baseman who was standing on the bag, orstraddling it whichever you prefer, so I ran into him, tripped over him, got back up, and made it to second, safely, very easily. The umpire, didn't call interference, because he says the guy was not in the base path. I would assume that standing the bag is part of the base path, but what do I know. I didn't throw an elbow or anything, just when I was rounding to go to second, I clipped his leg, and I tripped, I don't know about him but I did. SHouldn't this be interference?

How about this variation of "obstruction": The batter hits a line drive down the 3B line with a base runner on 2B. The 3B is standing about 3' in foul territory and about 3' towards home and looking out towards LF and the baserunner runs right into him. It didn't prevent the run from scoring (knocked our 3B senseless for a few mintues) but could have. Is that "obstruction?
If the fielder is in the runner's path intentionally or unintentionally it is obstruction.

However, if the game is being played under Fed rules or a league that uses any type of malicious contact rule, it could be deemed malicious contact by the runner. Malicious contact supercedes obstruction; the runner is out and ejected from the game.

It could have been if it had caused the runner to not score. Being he scored then it isn't obstruction.

No, it isn't interference, it's obstruction. And it's a HTBT call for the umpire. If the ump thinks you would have made third safely had the obstruction not happened, he should award you third. Otherwise, you get what you got.

Actually F5 (the third-baseman, for those from Rio Linda) CAN NOT BE IN FOUL TERRITORY at the time of the pitch, he MUST be in fair territory.

LOL, you must be an EIB fan, too! I don't know of anyone else who so consistantly disparages the residents of Rio Linda. LOL

As for the situation, F5 wasn't in foul territory at the pitch, he just happened to be there when the runner went through the area.
