Bases loaded, no outs. Batter hits a possible double play ball to the 2nd baseman, who flips to SS for the out at 2nd. Runner from 1st slides past the bag, and is ruled to have interfered with the throw to first, which the batter had beaten out. Both are then ruled out, which I understand. The questions is, the umpires then took the run off the board from the runner at third that scored during the play, and sent him back to third base as well as the runner that advanced to third back to second. Is this correct?

thecloser, I think in your senerio it would be from TOT since it was from the outfielder. In that case the runner on 1st if he had not crossed HP by the time of the throw, would return to third and the batter would be out. If he had crossed HP before release then he is safe as well and all runs score with B4 still out.

thecloser,
The OP involves an illegal slide in a force play. Here's the penalty part of rule 8-4-2:
PENALTY: The runner is out, the ball is dead immediately, and interference is called. On a force-play slide with less than two outs, the runner is declared out, as well as the batter-runner. Runners shall return to the bases occupied at the time of the pitch. With two outs, the runner is declared out. The batter is credited with a fielder’s choice.

So for the OP, it is TOP. dash and Jimmy are sure Smile

Your subsequent situtation is substantially different. There is no attempt to break up a double play, nor is there an illegal slide.

GovernorTim,

For thecloser's second scenario it would be Time of Interference rather than Time of Throw for returning any runners.
