My 2010 son has been invited to come watch a practice or intrasquad scrimmage at a local D1 school. Does this violate in recruiting rules? Or is it considered an "official visit"?

Also, when coaches invite a player to attend a game and give them tickets to attend, should the player make sure he says hello to the coach? I assume after the game would be best?

Mom, I'm not sure about that one, but someone will pop on here and let you know.

I don't think it is. You can visit on your own anytime, with maybe a minor exception, that I can't recall this moment.

That might be an official visit. They usually ask for your high school transcript for an "official visit".

The fact that it is local may be impacting the rules.

I responded to your post because of your last two questions.

Make sure he visits with the coach.

Go early. Stay late.

Opportunity is knocking...............

This is not an official visit, just a way of inviting you within rules to visit them. I think that most coaches prefer that you speak with them before the game. Go early, watching practice is very important, JMO.

On his campus, you may speak with the coach.

Unofficial visit differs in that the school pays for transportation, meals, lodging.
As TPM and DXBIBLE say, an official visit is defined as one in which the school finances the trip in whole or part. (13.02.15.1).

Furthermore, a school may not provide an official visit until the player has attended the opening day of classes in his HS school senior year, so a 2010 player can't be offered an official visit now. (13.6.2.2.1) A violation would be an institutional violation only.

For an unoffical visit, the player may receive up to $100 in expenses or entertainment. Unless it is a pretty high end game (March Madness basketball regional?), the game tickets shouldn't exceed the $100 limit. (13.02.15.2)

Also, another differnce (my experience is mostly D1), a player may not attend an OV unless all his transcripts, clearinghouse info, etc., has been sent into school and the player must receive information about grad rates and sign forms (rules, regulations). You do not have to be accepted as yet to the school.

So unless you haven't done that, it's not official. Smile
