ALBBALL...
New Head Coach, Pat Carey is really trying to get out and recruit to compete in the MAAC. Coach Zoccollilo retired this summer after 20+years (after I was gone)His son Pete is a minor leaguer from Rutgers. The school is tremendous academically especially the business school. Lot's going on with the campus, new buildings going up yearly. When I was there it was a real commuter school, only one small dorm and many kids in off campus housing. In the last 8 years they have built 3 new dorms with plenty of kids now on campus. The only negative with the baseball program is that there is no field on campus. Games are played at Salesian HS where Iona has built and maintain the facility.

Assistant Coach Guerney was the head coach at New Rochelle HS the past few years where he had a lot of success and quite a few players go on to college.

I know 3 of the kids in this years recruiting class and they are all good players who should make an impact. Usually, as with most of the MAAC schools the top 2 or 3 kids get a shot in the draft and Iona has had their share in recent years.

My firehouse is directly across the street from the school so I get a first hand view of EVERYTHING going on. It also gives me the opportunity to drop in and see some games. If I can help answer any questions, drop me a PM.

To add to what Coach Merc has said

Coach Carey will put IONA on the map

He knows his baseball , my son played against him for a number of summer seasons, and is he was not only a solid player but a solid mind regarding baseball. He was also our Guest Speaker last summer at our Binghamton Showcase and wowed the parents and players with his presentation--we are extremely hopeful we can get him back again with us this summer

As for academics they, IONA, are superb --- you just need to like a college in a city atmosphere
I would think it still considered is a commuter school even with all the building, but you could check and see the % of students who live on campus in the Princeton Review.

As Coach Merc points out the bad thing, besides the local surroundings, is they don't have a field. Playing on a high school field is not good, IMO.

Look at the final standing from last year...lots of work to do. How does this compare to his other choices?????

Just to give some back ground, I am an Iona grad, born and raised 1 mile from the school and now work acroos the street. Up until 8 years ago the school had about 80 rooms on campus now there are over 30% living in dorms and another 20-30% living in the communty. student population about 3500. The community is second to none. the campus is surrounded on 2 sides by Million dollar homes, another side by a commercial area and a fourth side that is less affluent and as you move away in that direction it decreases slightly. there are 2 new buildings going up in the center of campus. A student Union and an additional athletic building with new weight rooms, offices and training areas.

Add in an abitious new coach and things can happen.

In comparrison to the list above, Marist is a nice school in an area that is worse. Manhattan is in Riverdale,, again an area of Million Dollar homes until you go in the wrong direction. Games are played in Van Cortland Park.

The Iona program suffered the last few years due more to lack of effort in recruiting then anything else. The ONLY negative draw back is the field. When I played, the baseball field was right in the middle of campus. It was a lousy field compared to the one they have now but it was the center piece.

MAAC conference coaching changes have been plentiful in the last 2 years. Iona, Marist (4 coaches in the last few years), Manhattan, Niagra, Canisius, and Rider.
Thank you for the feedback. We know that Iona is in a rebuilding mode. My son will have his official visit soon. We have an idea what his academic money will be. Hopefully the whole package will be good. There are three D3 schools that are in the mix. Montclair State, Cortland, Western New England, and Methodist College. Also two D2. Pace and St. Thomas Aquinas.
ALBBall, Let me know when you have your visit scheduled. Also the Pace coaches are great guys. I will be at their clinic tonight (Mondays) in Brewster. I have had some great baseball conversations with Coach Muscatt from St Thomas Aquinas. He's always around.

BobbleheadDoll, I am about 45 minutes away from Bridgeport. We have played a few games at the Stadium.
