Had a strange one the other night, runner on 2nd, ball hit to CF, play at the plate, 8-3-2. Catcher blocks, sweeps, and when the ump gives the "show me the ball" point the catcher brings it up to show and it flips out of the glove, he juggles it, and when it finally hits the ground he calls the runner safe. now, the ball clearly came out of the glove AFTER the tag...so in my thought process its like a transfer and he's out. now what i asked the umpire, who said my catcher didn't have control, if after the juggle, had he caught the ball and it not dropped, would he have called the runner out?? needless to say he got the "deer in the headlights" look and told me "that's how I saw it Coach" and I told him that was fine, I just wanted to know if he had caught the juggle after the tag when showing you the ball would that *&%^$#% runner be out?? As he was clearly lost i decided not to overload him with 4 innings remaining so I calmly thanked him for helping that one make sense and returned to the dugout, thinking of that line from Summer Catch"..."get off your knees you're blowing the game"...
So fellow gurus...safe or out??
