Is it fun? Wow, I've pondered that general topic a lot over the years. I think baseball, or sports in general, is very much like my other two recreational passions, which are hunting and fishing. Are any of them fun? Heck yes! Do they all have their down moments, you betcha. What we all gain from them though, over time, is that we remember the good moments and tend to forget the bad times for the most part. Our experiences in all of these pastimes contributes to buildng full lives and give us reasons to live rather than just exist. We need to feel the exhileration, we need the adrenaline rushes that we get from participating.

I think another thing that makes these pursuits so addictive is the need to know an outcome. I don't so much mean needing to know the outcome of a game as much as the events that make up that game. Who's going to win the battle between a pitcher and hitter? Is the basestealter going to succeed in his steal attempt, or will the defense prevail? I think all of the things that go into a game become addictive to us, and we have a need to know how it's going to turn out.

Heck, I need to know who's going to prevail in an encounter when I'm out hunting, regardless of whether I ever get a shot or not. Outsmarting the animal I'm seeking and having the opportunity is at least as important as how it ends up. That is very much, at least to my way of thinking, similar to so many of the things that go on during a baseball game. All of these things have incedible highs and lows, the side that is supposed to win doesn't always, and that is part of what makes it all so great. It is in part the need to know how its gonna turn out that I think drives all of us back again and again to all forms of sports. I've said for years that there is a reason they play the game. It is to find out who's going to prevail in each encounter and ultimately win, and that is very much fun. In fact, its addictive. If you doubt that, think of this example. If you've taped a game to watch later and hear the final score before you get a chance to watch it, do you really care as much about seeing the game? I think most of us don't really care nearly as much once we already know the outcome.
[QUOTE] The EH,
That is a very tough choice! The wedding anniversary is a very special time. It is a time to rekindle feelings of love and compassion --- a time to once again share those moments that 50 years have eroded. But sharing of those special moments should be left to the two rejuvenated lovebirds. Give them those special moments alone. Your presence would only be a stark reminder of reality. You mention priorities? EH, don’t be selfish! For one weekend you should think of THEIR priorities. Allow your compassionate side to control your actions. Where you go and what you do are immaterial here but you need to make yourself scarce. Vegas and college baseball should allow them the time they so desperately need.

I gotta keep this one around just in case.

Are I could go to my In-Law's 50th Wedding Anniv.?

Any chance you could talk the inlaws into moving their anniversary celebration to Las Vegas??????

Nothin' like anniversary cake and a good ol' ball park hot dog with some baseball action!!! Now THATS what I'd call a gooooood celebration!! HA!!!! Big Grin

Congratulations to the inlaws,...thats an awesome milestone!!!
Fun= Lively joyous play or playfulness, 2. a source of amusement.
To me that sounds alot like 5&6 yr olds and their parents enjoying a baseball game.
My boys LOVE baseball and my 13 yr old always says, (even during the season) man I can't wait till we have a game. My 23 yr old is antsy and can't wait to get going and I can't wait to get outside and throw some bp to the 13yr old and hit him some fly balls and grounders, I'll even catch him, get some bruises and love it!
I'll tell the kid, go out- play hard and have some fun! The kids love playing, love the competition, and they like looking at old pictures of themselves playing THE GAME. (that one surprised me a little)
Fungo, you're making me think too much Big Grin Maybe from now on I'll say something like- Go out, play hard and show everyone how much you love this game!
We have so many great memories and we loved what we were doing, but it looks like I've used the wrong word. On the other hand, "just go out and have some fun" might be ok sometimes too.
