in my last tournament this year we were playing in the championship game against a pretty good team but we were winning. the pitcher pretended to pick the guy off of second base, but he never threw the ball and every pretended the ball was in the outfield, even the centerfielder looked as if he had missed it but he didnt. luckily our guy stayed on second and didnt get out. a buddy called this play, "a play someone uses when they know they can't win"

ur opinions on this play.

Have seen it used successfully in youth ball a handful of times.

This same play created tremendous uproar when two of our mustang all star teams ended up in the sectional final. The player who was picked off to end the game was the son of a board member and it created repurcussions that still haunt the league and the individuals two years later...

Legal? Yes.

Ethical? Depends upon your point of view, decepetion has always been a part of the game.

Sucessful. Yep. But was the win the headache?

Here is another one....

Player on first, player on third. Player on first takes off, halfway he falls on the ground and screams in obvious (and Faked)pain. Everyone stops out of concern. The player on third walks home in the confusion. This one was used a decade ago and still holds strong emotions....

Aint' youth ball fun!
I would not teach the fake pick off at second though I make our kids aware of it because it has been used against us. I think most teams have more important things to be practicing rather then this kind of trick play. The only time I got upset about it was when the defensive times fans were in on it. They all yelled together for their MI to chase the ball. I thought that was bush.
