Big controversy here in the epicenter. (Of course, by epicenter, I mean Oregon, the center of major division 1 baseball talent in the country )

As you probably heard, University of Oregon has decided to re-establish its baseball program after a 2+ decade haiatus. Of course, the two straight national championships won by Oregon's arch-rival OSU had nothing to do with this decision.

But word came down this week that Oregon had offered the head coaching job to Pat Casey, OSU's coach who last year turned down an offer at Notre Dame to sign a 10 year contract with the Beavers and who then went on to win his second NCAA title with the Beavs.

So, boardmates: is that bad form?

They might as well shoot for the stars, right? It certainly doesn't hurt to ask....who knows better than Casey how to find the good players spread throughout the Pacific Northwest? There has been some talk in the local paper here in Richmond that Richmond Braves (AAA) manager Dave Brundage apparently is interested in the job. He's an Oregon native, played at OSU, and spent most of his career as player/coach/manager in the Mariners system. This is his first year in the Braves org.

Never mind, I just read that Brundage removed himself from consideration for the Oregon job.
Vandy coach, Corbin, said to be the top choice. He was in town on the weekend. Took in a minor league game with the UO AD, OSU coach Casey, and a Padres big cheese. What a strange sight for us Eugeneans to try to figure out!

JMHO, but I think the UO should leave Casey out of it. It is terrific to want the best, and he is, but far too many Duck/Beaver households would be forever riled up by the treachery of it all. Though I know baseball people in town have been lobbying for the return of a program for years, the Beavers success has obviously created new enthusiasm to bring it back. The Ducks are riding OSU's Beavertails.

Absolutely not. Good idea IMO.

Other than the very obvious problem of building a program from scratch (zero), I would think its easier to recruit kids down the road to Eugene.

Anyways, I'm with 06catcherdad...now finally the Pac-10, I am pleased with the extra opportunities for West Coast kids with the new program.

Go Ducks! QUACK! QUACK!
