I know we use this phrase on here all the time but it hit close to home today.
We agreed to have a Cardinal Rookie league player stay with us for the summer since our middle son has a host family in the Coastal Plain League (I recommend every baseball family that is able do this). He came on Friday night and was very nice in every way.
This morning he was up early and I asked what he was gonna do today. His response was "Go Home." They told me last night after the game they did not need my services any longer. I know it happens every day and some of you have experienced it but I felt so bad for this kid. He had worked hard to get a chance. He was drafted out of high school and chose college. Then was not drafted out of college and worked his way into the organization. But as the manager told him last night. It sucks to be at the bottom of the totem pole.

Just a reminder: It is a business not a game at the end of the day.

You don't really know what hitting close to home actually is. My son was released this spring from the cardinals, after 5 seasons, however, it was done in a professional manner and all business like, are you sure that the manager told him it sucked to be at the bottom of the totem pole or was that his/yours interpretation? Or am I misunderstanding your statement?

I am not understanding the path of the player you describe. He was drafted, went to college than made his way to the organization? Does that mean he was signed as a free agent? There are two players that were signed less than a month ago and now not in the organization. Perhaps for some reason, their contracts were voided, sometimes this happens after physicals and testing. It's just not typical of teams signing guys and then they are gone a few weeks later.

I don't mean to doubt you but something just doesn't sound right. There are hundreds of guys that work hard to reach the next level, it just doesn't happen for everyone and there are different reasons why.

There were no transactions listed (as of this post) for releases yesterday for JC. Do you have more info on what exactly happened to the player? If his contract was voided, I am assuming there was no actual release.

He was signed on a free agent contract earlier in the year. I really don't want to give his name on here. He was released Monday night. I don't know why it has not posted yet. I never said anything about them not being nice when they released him. I would take the manager's info being the business end of it. When they have nothing or very little invested in you they will easily let you go. He pitched several games for a couple of different teams including JC and had a decent era.
Just part of the business.

I understand it is part of the business, trust me, and I understand the part about free agency. Just wondering why there was no transaction listed for JC as to any release of any player.

This is what every team does daily, lists all "business transactions".
Since there was no follow up to the story I thought I might add that the player in question still is active, whether he left on his own or still with the team is in question, but he was not released.

Yes, this is a business and it's important to understand that in this business sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you.

Whatever it be I personally wish the player best of luck. Most players don't leave until they are asked to, but sometimes reality just hits as to how long you will allow the bear to keep chomping, it's something I completely understand.
