I would venture a guess that many of the players expecting calls are also out playing showcase tournaments this weekend.

The calls don't cease after July 1st ... Make sure that your answering machine at home has the reference to a Cell phone number (preferably your son's cell phone) for the coaches convenience.

They can only call once/week. If they get an answering machine with a cell number, they will hang up and call the cell phone. If they have to leave a message on the answering machine, you will need to call them back.

The "myth" of July 1 continues to grow--

The "big fish" ,as you term them,in most cases know who is after them and who isn't-- and there are not that many "big fish" around as one would think

A lot of things can happen between July 1 and the early signing period in November--I have seen many a kid "commit" in July and then in November sign early with another school

No --- I do not think they start out behind the "eight ball"--the good one know what they are doing--you cannot sign them until November anyway--until then it is just "words"
I wonder how important July 1 is...although I know the period from now to November is for many. In the last week, the SF Chronicle has had articles indicating UC Berkeley has already received 4 verbals for 2006 with NLI to be signed in November. Appears offers are already known and decisions made with coaches focusing on players earlier than ever.
It's a long process folks, so don't get too anxious out there! Eek Yes, many players will give verbal agreements this month. BUT, you'll also read articles on college sites this month of senior/05's players signing NLI's for next Fall. (The June draft often puts more baseball money back into the coffers!) It can be a 12+ month recruiting process, so don't get too concerned about the July 1st date.

Good Luck to all our '06 players and families! Smile
The funny thing so far is he's received calls from some schools that we DIDN'T know were tracking him ... I can only guess they saw him at the area code tryouts last week at LMU, got them interested enough to ask around about him and look at his results.

He's had an ongoing email dialog with several schools for the past six months, where the interest seems high. A couple calls from that group ... hopefully the others start coming in.

He made the 1st cut for the Brewers area code team, so will be back for the final tryout at USC on the 15th ... there were a lot of college coaches there.
As many posts above indicate, don't make too much out of July 1. Plenty of communication goes on long before July 1 and loooong after. July 1 just allows for one more form of communication (call from coach) to BEGIN.

Among other things, I'd note that there are probably close to 50 or so schools (maybe) more whose staffs are at the Stanford camp right now and aren't calling anyone. Certainly, there are many more events around the country being attended or that coaches are waiting to attend before they start their serious "shopping".

Also, as another post above says, many coaches may be on vacation, etc.

My son got his first call around July 15 and then they "sprinkled" in over the next few months, ending up with quite a few very nice opportunities.

Of everything in the recruiting process, IMO July 1 is much to do about nuthin'.

infielddad,
I agree with what you have said, I am sure there are many coaches who would want to wrap up their recruiting before school begins again in August. So many decisions have been made already. Some don't get into recruiting heavily until August.
I know Dave's coach is making his phone calls today.
Whatever happens, best of luck and remember to enjoy. Remember,it's not how many calls your son gets or if he gets the ones he wants, it's whether the ones he gets turn out to be good ones (you get the jist). Smile
Here too! Son's school just signed another '05 player this Tuesday. The important thing is to be SURE it's the right fit for you before giving a verbal. I know of a couple of players that had barn-burner seasons their Senior year and said they wish they had waited for more options. Ya just never know. Do your homework and IMO don't let $$$'s be the only reason you choose a school.
Cool

PS, Bullwinkle, though I must say the Green & Gold looked good on you, it's nice to see you back in antlers! Big Grin

Hello all, first time poster. Rather new to following ball at this level. Got interested because of my nephew's participation on a select team. Been reading for a couple weeks now and enjoying this site.

I believe cysting has made a good point regarding the pecking order. My nephew is a '06 pitcher in Texas (DFW area). His mom said they got more than ten calls yesterday. They are pretty excited to say the least.
