Earlier in the year, The Tigers were playing really well as were The Red Sox so The Sox could have missed the playoffs even if they did have a good year.

It really hasn't worked out that way. The Tigers have tried as hard as they could to throw it away, and the Red Sox collapsed as well but The Sox apparently will not be able to make the playoffs anyway. Why? Not because of any other team, it's simply because even this watered down year (in both leagues) they won't be one of the top 4 teams let alone the best. They flat out aren't good enough.

FBD,

It IS a watered down year, with the Cubs carrying the heaviest anchor! However, I'm not sure why, but I believe that the Sox will make the AL playoffs. There is no reason to think that the Tigers won't continue to struggle, or that the Twins can close this out with a very suspect starting rotation. Can the middle of the Sox lineup, or the top and bottom for that matter, not get hot for even a week? It really won't take much more to make it to the playoffs, IMO, but with the exception of the Yankees the rest of the teams in the current version of the AL are all mediocre.

PS-If you're a betting man don't be afraid to fade my predictions. Heck, I was worried about the Bears today.

Rosy, for a long time I felt the same way you do. But the sox have been given every chance to catch up.. if they played even .500 ball since July 15, they would be in first place.

It's to the point where the numbers are very much stacked against them. 4 back of the wild card and 5 back of first place with 13 to go is tough to make up even if you are playing well, which they aren't.

Looks like Soxnole was correct in his statement about the fate of th esox being determined on this West Coast trip.
