I am a 2013 RHP who is being recruited by the majority of Ivy League schools. I've gotten interest from some bigger baseball schools, but I am pretty set on the Ivy League at this point for the academics they have to offer. While I have pretty thoroughly researched the Ivies I'm most interested, I still don't quite understand how commitments work with Ivy League schools. I have some home visits and campus visits set up with some Ivies for the end of July and August, will they ask me to commit after admissions reads through my transcript? Will they wait for Official Visits in the Fall to ask for commitments? I'm just not really sure what sort of timetable to expect. I don't know if this helps, but, baseball-wise, I have a mid-to-upper 80's fastball, "PLUS slider" (according to an MLB scout), and academically, I have a 2400 SAT and 3.94 GPA with all honors and AP classes. I hope you all can help. Thanks.

If you scored a perfect score on your SAT (2400) you are one of about 400 people in the entire country to do so. Along with an A average and strong recruitment from the baseball coach, you are almost guaranteed acceptance to any of the Ivy schools. Having said this, your next step is to choose the best fit for you. You can apply Early Decision to only one of the schools but you will have the decision by Christmas. If the school that you like best wants you then you could conceivably have the process done by the end of the year.

gsh54,

Welcome ot HSBBWeb. Congrats on your academics and athletics.

Verbal commitments work the same with Ivys as they do with other D1 schools. The coach will ask you if you want to attend their school. You can say "yes", "no", or "can I talk to my parents and get back to you". The biggest difference between D1 and D1 Ivy, in the context of recruiting, is "when" and "how" assuming you have the academics to be accepted.

If you've been talking with other D1s especially bigger baseball schools, you'll know they've already made a bunch of offers to pitchers. You may know friends that have already committed to D1s. Ivys are just getting ramped up for commitment season right now. I think we'll start hearing about verbal committments very soon (next two weeks). I know a few folks that are close. I would expect an Ivy that genuinely wants you will make an offer on your unofficial visit in July and August. They may wait for the Fall Official Visits to make an offer for other reasons. They will only make you an offer after they have received approval from admissions that you are "likely" to be admitted. This is the pre-read process. Once your formal ED/EA application is received, and reviewed..... Admission will issue you a "Likely Letter" in early to mid-October. Between the application submission and early October, you will get updates from the Coach and his academic liason about the status of your application and the Likely Letter. The Likely Letter is a formal letter from Admissions which states that you will be offered admission on April 1 barring a major drop in grades or conduct that would cause them to seriously question your character.

I can't answer that question. It depends on the player you are, how much they want you, and who else they have on their list. That is absolutely a good question to ask the coaches. They certainly will ask you about your timetable. I think you need to ask the same question of them.

I would continue to research the schools, and their academic & baseball programs. Each school is very unique. When all is said and done, they are all fantastic schools who's common bond is an athletic conference.

As swampboy suggested, you may want to browse through some of the previous HSBBWeb posts on this topic to get other ideas and perspectives.

Feel free to PM me if you have further questions.
