Having gone through the "release" procedure recently with my son I certainly can see both sidesof the issue here. The AD from Purdue claims they stopped recruiting after Paxson signed with them and that they had "put together a roster....used up a chip" as justification for not releasing him from his NLI. I say BS. D1 has 80-plus full scholarships for football and many of those are redshirted and don't even sniff the field their freshman year. What a poor excuse for a college administrator. I've talked to a number of college coaches here in Florida about players changing their minds for whatever reason most(excluding 1) have told me they would not feel comfortable having a player on their team that has expressed a desire to go elsewhere-for whatever reason. I think it is an ego problem with the Purdue coach and hope this story develops a little further so that this will bring some national attention on a system that IMO definitely needs changing.
Good friend of my son at USF(from Massachusetts) did not get the opportunity that he was promised when recruited his freshman year and asked to be released to attend a college that recruited him in the Northeast. Coach and AD relinquished and said OK but excluded the Big East Conference-well, Connecticut was the school and so he couldn't even discuss attending with the coach. USF said sorry about that. Kid is now back at USF this year and hoping he'll get the opportunity he wasn't given last year. What are the chances?
When my son asked for his release to talk to colleges they not only excluded the Big East but every team from Florida that was on their schedule last year(except Bethune-Cookman). We asked why they didn't put B/C on the list and they said "We didn't think Ty would be interested in going there."?! My wife asked them why they even had to exclude certain schools from the list and the answer was "Because we can." It's this type of thinking that needs to be changed. A coach can switch schools no matter what promises he has made to his recruits, but a player cannot even though he has honored his 1 year commitment-unless he sits out a year or gets a release. Should a coach have to sit out a year as well?
Thanks guys. Just a note. Ty had a talk with Luke H. the other day and told me he really hoped that he would come back to school. Thought he was a really cool guy and he could learn a few things from him as well as making the team stronger. I can't honestly see turning down 3-4 million but stranger things have happened.
