Jim, who is going into the Hall of Fame this weekend, often is viewed as a standoffish human being. This article, describing an incident long ago that I remember well, shows another side of him.

May we all rise to the occasion to help a child in need the way that he did.

I grew up in the Northern Adirondack mountains on a Dairy farm, with a family of rabid Red Sox fans. My father and grandfather preached Red Sox history to me growing up. I got out of school early in 2nd grade only to see Bucky f'in Dent ruin my day.

That all being said, my family took one vacation every year, a weekend trip to Boston to stay with family and go to a Red Sox game. I was 5 years old in 1975, Rice's rookie year. I saw one game a year for the next 7 years and I clearly remember Jim Rice having big games 4 or 5 times. One in particular I remember Rice tying a game late then winning it with a walk off (term wasn't used then). I was in the Right Field bleachers and vividly remember nobody leaving Fenway until Rice came back out for a curtain call. "WE WANT RICE, WE WANT RICE" still rings in my ears.

Congratulations Jim, I grew up watching you dominate.

What rings in my ears is the sound from how hard he hit balls off the Monster. I'll bet he lost more homers lined off the top of the wall for doubles than pops that caught the screen.

Best Rice hit: Out of the park to the right of the flag pole.
