Just finished reading "Johnny U - the Life and Time of John Unitas". Simply a wonderful read - takes you back to a time when professional athletes were just people. Really a great perspective on one of the greatest quarterbacks who ever played the game.

I'll bring this on to the subject of baseball by saying the next to last chapter where it discusses his brief time with the Chargers was certainly illuminating on the subject of drugs and sports - all the way back in the early 70s.

"Cereal bowls full of anabolic steriods, 'little pink pills' were put out onto the tables at training camp - right next to the salt and pepper shakers."

I had always thought of roids as being a problem of the 90s - but this book states that - at least in football - the problem goes back way before that.

There will be closet "roiders" coming out of the woodwork as soon as an initial group opens that door. Athletes are a close knit bunch that do not spill their secrets easily. When Jose came out and spilled the beans there was very little argument on the content, but rather ripping on the guy carrying the message. I feel that the more players that are implicated, the more that will come to their defense. That will open Pandoras box and some surprises that will stun the sports world will be released.
