My Jr. son has the opportunity to play in either (or both) the Jr. and/or Sr. Arizona Fall  2014 Classic events.

His regular scout team is going to the Sr. event. He could hookup with another team to do the Jr. event, and it would include the academic all american team tryout. We need help with this decision and would like to hear experiences or advise from those wiser on this than us.  We are trying to balance missing school (2 days per tourney) and cost of tournaments as primary considerations.  Any suggestions?  If we had to pick one, which situation is better for getting a good look? Is it worthwhile to go to both in terms of time and finances?

We did both last year and would agree that there were more Coaches and definitely more Pro Scouts, at the Senior Classic.  Although I would add that at the Senior Classic, many coaches/scouts were congregated at specific games to see specific high caliber prospects.  The Junior Classic seemed a bit more low key, but my son received high quality follow ups from both events.

As far as cost and schedule, we were lucky: Both events just happened to fall during our Fall Break from school, so no issues there.  We visited schools between the two events ... AZ in October is not a bad place to kill a week!  Son's Scout team is going back to the Senior Classic this year.

I would do it, but not sure if it is advisable to put in 4hours of driving, then the tryout, then the game in the evening,(hoefully), then 4 hours back home and then take the PSAT's. Not that the PSAT's is all that important anyway in terms of score, but they have them on multiple dates. Take them on another date? Really a personal decision, but the Sr Classic Academic game was the single best event my son went to in his whole recruiting process. The Jr Classic event likely got him on the radar of a number of schools but really not sure.

For strong academic students, the PSAT is CRITICAL!  There are not multiple dates for the PSAT, often there is just one other date in your area the same week during the school day.  Why is the PSAT critical for strong academic juniors? National Merit Scholarships, which is only earned based on PSAT score.  For students of Hispanic descent, there is something called National Hispanic Merit.  Many schools offer 100% to National Hispanic Merit finalists.  I know that Arizona offers 100% tuition and room/board and Arizona State offers 100% tuition.  Check the website collegeconfidential.com for more info on PSAT based scholarships

Thanks for your reply. We plan on driving up the night before and then tryout. Hopefully he makes it and plays that evening. We did try and reschedule but there is nothing else in the area even close to where we live.
