Both Lake City and North Florida did away with their baseball programs. Both chose to do away with some sports to save academics.

As to programs, many of them are top notch. I agree with bobby that have to know if kid is good enough to play in Fla. Panhandle Conference has Pensacola Junior College (went 40-7 in 2008), Northwest Florida College (formerly Okaloosa-Walton), Gulf Coast (Panama City), Tallahassee Community College, and Chipola (Marianna). All of them are GOOD programs, and know kids at several of them.

Other good programs that have seen or know kids attend are Seminole CC (NE of Orlando), Santa Fe (Gainesville), Central Florida CC (Ocala), and St. Pete College. Polk, Hillsborough, FCCJ (Jax), Lake/Sumpter, and Pasco/Hernando less known but nothing to sneeze at.
Indian River had some player/scholarship issues last year..will be much better this year. Miami took down Miami-Dade like 19-0 and went 9 and tied Indian River 0-0 this last week (11/7)..OB has a solid well grounded team and looks strong going in.
St Johns has a new coach..the ex-pitching coach at Florida, Coach Jones..might be competitive and Blackie has FCCJ rebuilding but with some solid pitching coming in.

Juco in Florida is better than in the rest of the country. Your son has to be a very good player to play for teams like, St Petersburg, Chipola, Manatee, Santa Fe, Daytona, Dade, Broward, Seminole..etc...They all are very good.
Good luck!

OMG. Didn't the best Florida NJCAA lose in the WS to Hagerstown CC?

Chipola is on a different level right now in terms of wins and pro and college prospects.

That's good news. My nephew just turned down a very good scholarship at a very prestigious program to play at Chipola.
You have the-Mid-Florida Conference,Panhandle Conference,Southern Conference and the Suncoast Conference. Which teams are the strongest and look to do well this spring. (2009). I know down in the Suncoast Conference, Manatee and St. Petersburg should do well and have a good shot at making some noise at Winter Haven come play off time.
Indian River has 2-3 record right now but they have beat ranked squads in both of their wins, Manatee and Santa Fe went down and they lost to Polk (Errors galore..it was COLD!!! in Winter Haven..20's with a wind chill into the teens..yow we lost this game 16-12), Central Fla and Hillsborough I think...My son took a no no 5 2/3 into Santa Fe and ended up winning 7-2 on his first official outing..made all the sweeter because SF passed on him for a scholarship Big Grin

Daytona has started off strong beating Hillsborough and Polk. Lost a heartbreaker in the bottom of the 9th against St. John River yesterday. 2nd Baseman Baker Knox is 3rd in nation with a very high batting average after 16 or so at bats. My guy is having great sucess as shortstop turning about 7 double plays with him after 3 games. His bat needs to get into the game a little more though, it looks like he is begining to find it though.
JD, are you going to the Daytona game wednesday? Congratulations on your son's win!

Baker is a Palatka grad..we are very familiar with him..excelllent lead off guy..we are mulling it over about going down, it will hinge on if he's pitching I think. We would have beat Polk but couldn't catch or throw that day..same with CFCC. No winnin if you don't catch or throw Wink Heck 4 or 5 errors were the difference in our 1 run loss in the 1st game against Santa Fe....Before my kid put the clamps on em Big Grin..btw he didn't get to pitch against Baker, but he shut out Palatka last year at our place and got a ND at theirs.
Glad to hear the updates....a little hard to follow from up here in the "Great White North" (literally - storm rolling in tonight...ugh). Looking forward to the trip down to Daytona in March.

floridafan...I know it's early and I'm sure it's hard to gauge yet with such a young team, but do you think Daytona will have a legitimate chance to compete within the conference this year?
Leino is great behind the plate with a cannon for an arm! I will be there and will say hello, we are pretty non-descript (?) never do anything twice. My wife does carry a HUGE camera, but she will not be there, but I will find you.

My guy will be at SS and hopefully hit the ball hard some where. He has been killing a lot of worms so far.

Seminole is usually pretty strong, what hapened there?
It's early..I'm sure as it goes on we'll see some 1-0, 2-1 dogfights...Glad your boy performed Big Grin Sounds like an exciting game..I wish I'd have made it. I have a feeling we'll both get a bunch more excitement as it rolls along Wink
What a great state for baseball..I'm an administrator on another site and I'm getting a ton of envy from snowed in Northeasterners...as my favorite philosopher.."The Great Jerome" would say..nyuknyuknyuk..woob woob woob..
LOL! Yes we are playing Palm Beach today and saturday. I hear that they will be tough this year also. The River does love to hit! Free swingers all of them. I like that kind of coaching! OB is a good guy, he was here in Ocala with CFCC for a long time. He was recruiting my guy but 4 others from Ocala headed to Daytona so he wanted to be with friends
JD - Here's some more weather envy headed your way... In Chicago we are staring at another 2-4 inches of snow, and we're inside trying to get a decent workout in. At least we have the Blackhawk games to look forward to... Anyhow, there is a very flattering article on Florida JUCO and the tourny in the current Baseball America.
Those "Hawks" were always just a sliver away from the cup..Espo's brother and Bobby Orr always had an edge..

Good deal about your kid..get a good long look at him before he goes..you might not see much of him once he gets here Razz Is he destined for JU? Good team..

My son has managed to contract the scourge of college..mono and so he will be on a shelf for 6 weeks...arrrgh curses and drat!!! After losing his second start while trying to pitch with undiagnosed mono...gets a while to think about it..
The kids always try to suck it up, all the while the parents know something "just isn't right". Give him credit though, he wants the ball and knows mono will prevent that. Hope he gets well soon and comes back strong. Yes, he is headed for JU.. Did my tag give it away? My sister moved to Orlando 15? years ago and never looked back, don't suppose I'll see him much... A couple of days in Jacksonville back in September convinced me of that.

Thanks floridafan....actually I am his uncle. I think you have met his father a few times though. My nephew has been struggling with his control, but the results haven't been too bad. I've seen that your boy has been mashing pretty good down there!

Couple of tough losses this week. I felt bad for the boys. Let's hope they can finish up the season strong and if not make a run, at least build for next year.
