Calls are likely to come at any time, but the earlier you are called on July 1 the higher priority you can assume you are with that early call from that school.

It means you have the ability they are looking for and they know who you are. They tend to work right down their wish list on July 1.

If you don't get called July 1 it means...

1 - They don't know enough about you or haven't seen you enough.

2 - You are not a high priority recruit at this time.

3 - They don't think you can play at their level at this time.

4 - You are a bit farther down on their recruiting wish list.

Try to remember that the same kids tend to get many calls from different schools on July 1. This is just the starting point. Recruiters don't stop working and there's plenty of time to make your mark. You could still end up being an important recruit, even their very best recruit.

I know a lot has changed since our older son went through this (2003). But the school he ultimately attended was the first caller...about 8:00 am.

However there was one school that he became very interested in (and at the time a top-25 program) that didn't call until a few days later. A conversation with the coach later revealed that they didn't make any calls on July 1...assuming they were telling the truth.

Another school (Pac-10) called on July 2. Older brother answered the phone..."No, he's not here right now." (He was at the Stanford camp that day). Caller asked, "Has he been getting a lot of these calls?" Older brother answered, "Yeah, I think so." Caller asked, "Do you mind telling me from who?" Older brother answered, "I don't think thats for me to tell you." Big Grin Caller responded with a chuckle, "Fair enough...its just all part of the game, ya know." Eek

So...calls on July 1 are good, very good. But I'm not sure there is any pattern you can bank on.

birdman14,
I can almost guarantee that my son won't be up before 8:30AM for phone calls either, but I agree your son was in a great position to be in. 247son was lucky enough to speak with a D1 coach yesterday on the phone on the way to a summer game (D1 had called his HS coach first and asked 247 to call him). Coach expressed a lot of interest, hopefully it's the beginning of a busy week, if not...he'll continue to work hard through the summer and fall.

PGStaff,
Jerry...I don't know you personally, but I'm a big fan. My son has participated in a few of your events, and they're hands down the best out there! But that's not why I'm a fan. Perfect Game is in the middle of a Very busy few weeks, yet you still take time out of your day/night to post on the HSBBWeb to help parents and kids alike. Thanks, I know there are a ton of people like me that appreciate it!
While receiving calls on July 1st and the following days is nice, remember that the coaches are spreading a pretty wide net and contacting their A, B, C, D, etc. lists.

You may get calls on July 1st and each week thereafter with the coach expressing interest, however, until they make an offer or invite you for an official visit, you are still on the "long" list.

It is good to be on the their list, that is a nice start, but realize they are contacting many more players than they intend to sign.

My gut is telling me that the phone calls will come if relationship has already been established.

do scouts call July 1 (or soonafter) making an offer when they haven't communicated with the kid prior to that?

And, can a player expect to get an offer during a WWBA event - even if that school and player have never communicated before?
Offers are given, verbals commitments are made, in July at the WWBA tournaments. It's kind of like going shopping at the mall for these college coaches. However, the competition for players next week will include most of the DIs in the country.

They still talk to players and parents off the site that games are played at, but it's fun watching those college recruiters work. It's allowed us an opportunity to see the very best recruiters in action. Most are very professional in the way they go about their business.

It's neat when they come up and tell us they just got a commitment from so and so.

Remember that the "first" official signing period is in November.

I'll let you interpret the rules above. I can't tell you specifically what the rules are, but I can tell you what I saw last year. Because it is a tournament, you won't see much player to coach interaction except to say "hi" and "how is it going". I believe the coaches are limited to what they can say and do because it is an off campus event. My 2010 son received a number of D1 calls while at the tournament during July 1 as well as a bunch of introductions and hand shakes, but nothing more. I saw the same level of "player to D1 coach interaction (hand shakes and exchanging pleasantries)" with his travel teammates, so I don't think I'm too far off base. BTW, the coaches are very, very busy with their list of players and locations. If you miss their phone call, you can call back but they are limited to the one phone call during the week.
99.9% of baseball programs do not make calls @ 12:01am like they do in football & basketball. I have often wondered how a college baseball program would do if they had the recruiting budget and desire to recruit like the major college football and basketball programs. Is there a baseball coach with the ability to recruit like Coach K (basketball) or Urban Meyer (football)?

Son went through the process in July '08. He was playing games at WWBA on July 1, so his phone was off, but my recall is that he collected his messages about mid-day GA time, which would have been mid-morning our time. He also got a few first calls on July 2 and 3. Then all of them seemed to make their weekly calls on the same two-three days: Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.

Two of the teams that were very interested in him, and he them, did not call him on July 1.

And yes, at least two of the teams who called him were at the WWBA scouting, and saw him there, as well as other places, and they were able to speak with him personally after July 1 and after the tourney.

If you can go to WWBA, do so.
My son was able to travel and play in the PG U-17 Tournament in East Cobb, bow out of the tournament in the playoffs, visit his college and commit before getting on the plane to come home. I do not believe he received a call from the coach on July 1 but received e-mails saying he would be in East Cobb to see him play. I think e-mails have taken some of the drama out of the July 1 date, but moreso the fact that coaches prioritize seeing the rising seniors at East Cobb.

I don't know if 2014 will get any calls or not, but his summer coach gave the team some good advice today.

1.) make sure your cell phone is CHARGED

2.) make sure your voice mail message is professional

3.) even if you are totally not interested in a school, be pleasant, take as much info as you can , you might be able to help a teammate based on the schools needs.

4.) get as much information as you can

So if you do miss a call, is the number of times a coach can call you unlimited?   Can they text you now?
