Junior Day

When son went to their Junior Day way back in 2004 I think they had about 12-15 players attending. There was a talk, tour of the campus, then the day ended with lunch and a home baseball game.

RR23Jr got an email today for Junior Day 4/25/10 and he respectfully declined. He sent his updated info and upcoming plans. Just too many scheduling conflicts that weekend but he was pretty happy for his 1st Junior Day invite.

We were at the Pepperdine Junior Day last year. It is a good event, but there will be lots of players there if it is the same as before -- at least 30 or 40. That said, we would go again.

What places did JemazJr attend/decline Junior day? It seems that they schedule it during the college season and home games to make it fun. THe problem sometimes if spring baseball season conflicts with it. Is Pepperdine one of his top choices? Anyways, good luck to your son!

Does Pepperdine cast a wide net, or are those invited truly on their recruiting radar?

There might be about 10-20 baseball recruits at Jr. Day. There may be recruits from other sports there as well. We have been to a few Jr. Days. Football games will have the most recruits attending. Go if you can. You get a tour of campus, facilities, dorms, meet with counselors and admin. staff and eat at cafeteria. You get a feel of what the school is like.

Last year at Pepperdine, it was a very wide net.

Sons received a few Jr Day invites and is excited about them. Will you walk away from the visit with a firm sense of the schools interest level?

Perhaps not right away, but soon enough. Keep in mind that sometimes (surprisingly?) the answer is no.

If you dont get an invite to a "Junior Day" does that mean you are not a potential recruit for that school? We have good activity with letters and emails and even a D-2 offer for a 2011 RHP but no "Junior Day" invites...are we missing something?

I don't think you are missing anything. A lot of schools don't seem to do "Junior Days".

If you feel overlooked by a particular school that interests you, contact them.

"I would like to come visit [school name] on a weekend when I could see a game and tour the campus on an unofficial visit. Please let me know if I could possibly meet with you during such a visit, or if perhaps you might have a "junior day" when this might be possible."

Many times at junior days and camps the players you see being paid what you may think is special attention is actually because the coach knows the players more than the others not necessarily that they are studs

You can also see some kids pulled out for private discussions, tickets to games (over the winter, basketball for instance), even to discuss offers/negotiations.

That could be true; however, not in my son's case.

Several of the jr. day prospects who got lots of love ended up signing with the school, as did a number of kids at a Big 12 camp my son attended. At the school he ended up signing with, he was pulled aside during their camp 2-3 times and "wooed" by the coaches. Since coaches cannot do this type of thing off of school property, they oftentimes make the most of their opportunities while prospects are on their campus.

Incredible junior day this week-end " Pepperdine University. Picture this: beautiful baseball field above the bright blue Pacific ocean. 1st pitch thrown out by Pamela Anderson (yes, the REAL Pam), Wayne Gretsky & son in attendance, steve Garvey also there. What's not to love about the school?

For us the great news was that we were not there for jr day but to play baseball. If the recruits were paying attention the Waves were swept by the visiting team!
