I'm certain that the MLB clubs are all indemnified if an injury should occur. The players also probably carry their own policies to protect themselves. For some reason, yo made me think of Elliot Maddox. Remember when he sued the Mets, MLB, Shea Stadium and the City of New York when he stepped on a drain chasing a fly ball and blew out his knee? He lost the suit, with the court decision articulating that he assumed the risk when he took the field. So if players assume risk, they need to protect themselves, as do the ballclubs.
TR, interesting question. There likely will be several different insurance policies involved. Depending how this is being set up by MLB, etc, the players are likely to be employees of someone. Their injuries would all be covered by workers'compensation. While that will pay 100% of the medical bills, it pays only a small indemnity payment if the player cannot play, compared to the salary for MLB. If the player's contract does not provide for the payment of salary during the disability period, then either the player, MLB, the club or all of above will purchase a disability policy to cover the loss of pay. If it is very important for MLB to have the very best players, I would expect MLB to provide the disability insurance. Could be even more complicated for the Latin players.
