It was nice to be out there watching the boys play baseball again. His team didn't do very well (1-3) in the tournament but he played reasonably well after just finishing up basketball.
He made a great play at the plate blocking it so the slide slammed into his left leg and left the runner well short of the plate. This particular play left the other team yelling that it was interference and they should be able to bowl over the catcher if he is going to block the plate like that. After the yelling died down it did the old man proud to hear the base umpire come up to the home plate umpire and tell him it was a great block.
On this play he received the ball while standing, went down on his knees blocking access to the plate, received the contact from the slide and then applied the tag.
Not being the greatest baseball mind this brings up a question. If in this same scenario, if while applyng the tag he had dropped the ball and no longer had control of it, is he entitled to still block the plate while trying to retrieve the ball if it is physically possible to get the ball while still in that position? Reading posts about interfering at home plate has on occasion left me very confused about the subject.
Anyway it's great to be back at baseball!!
PS this is 12 year olds
